I think I might just commit to 'portraits' and try to take 52 decent portraits next year. I've basically been shooting one a week for the last six weeks anyway.

After working all year on my PAD I was going to the picture of the week theme anyway, count me in

This fits in with my time schedule and goals. Count me in.

I have to think some more, but one theme I'd like to consider for a whole year is "still life". Not closeups, or found stuff, but what I'd like to do is take still lifes by famous painters (or maybe not so famous) and work up a photo in that style.

For example, take someone like Georges Braque and some of his still lifes, like this one and work on making an image that is in that style, maybe even similar content.

Another week, take a traditional Cezanne.

Another week, something like this, bugs and all..

I'd like to restrict myself to using the 50mm lens. I think I'd learn a lot about all sorts of stuff: different ways of looking at things, pulling back a little, lighting, displaying, art history. It is a subject I've felt particularily no successful at. That's a strange sentence. Anyway.

I need to think more though, there are a couple other themes I have in mind.

If you run short on themes, then Photo Friday have a new theme each week, and have done so now for three years, so there should be some to choose from in the list...

That being said, if you have your own webspace, I really like the Pixelpost software. That's what I used for my weak attempt at PAD earlier this year and also I think what hopper uses, yes?

OK, help me understand. To use this, I have my own space online, then use this software to publish a sort of blog to my own space rather than to one of the blogging groups (like Blogger or so)? Is that it?

How difficult is it to do this (remember that I have had my own space online now for a couple years but haven't managed to figure out how to put up a website - talk about throwing away money)?

Right. Basically, you'll publish to a folder somewhere on your own webspace. You'll have an admin section that looks like this:

where you upload your photos.

You can customize it in a number of ways using templates or addons.

It's not hard to use at all and shouldn't be too hard to set up (I can help you if you need it.) You'll need to be using a host that provides the following:

Apache Webserver or Windows IIS
- PHP, version 4.3.0 or higher
- PHP with GD-lib, required for thumbnailing
- MySQL version 3.24.58 or higher

(Again, if that's all nachos, shoot me a PM. :) )

OK, I need to re-read this a couple times and then I'll probably send a HELP message.

Thanks!

mk nailed it. It's easy once you get things going.

for me, it was as simple as creating a database (my server space has an admin page, creating a database is as simple as thinking up a name). The software loads itself, the only tweaking you need to do is to a single file which needs the database name and password plugged into it. It takes about 10 seconds.

The pixelpost software has different themes you can choose (not millions like blogger, but a few solid ones).

Question (don't laugh):

The download doesn't have the usual choice of PC or Mac. Is that because it works online, and it doesn't matter?

Ursula - if you aren't comfortable with ftp, editing text files on a remote server, setting up a web site in general, etc - I'd strongly recommend taking mk up on her offer to set all this up for you ;)

It'll save your sanity in the long run.

I might be up for this too. A photo a week is much more attainable for me and will give me more time to think about the shot than just trying to grab one at the last minute because midnight is rolling around. I've tried a PAD for the last two years and have failed at both of them.

I like Gordon's idea of a portrait a week as it would fit along with my "business" and help me along with that. I'll have to ponder this a bit more and see if I can really commit myself this time around. I'll also take a peek at the list hopper posted as coming up with an idea would be the hardest part for me.

Thanks John, for starting this thread. :)

I setup a blog for myself on this project. If any of you create blogs or designate specific web space for this project, let me know. I would like to add links on my blog to you.

well, i think i may change it from week to week based on what i want to learn. Some weeks i will concentrate on lighting, others will be emotion, candids, focus, composition.

So your theme is "learning"? :)

Just because I'm wondering, isn't that a bit too broad a theme? Don't get mad now, OK. But I thought the point John was making was that it might be helpful to produce a sort of "cohesive body of work", that is, to explore something or another in depth, which is learning, of course, but in a more pointed manner?

I am just curious why it seems that many of us are so reluctant to commit to a theme for any length of time (or at least it seems like that to me). I think the idea of committing to a theme for whatever length of time would really produce good results, or at the least it would be an interesting experiment.

Hey, Lisa, I'm not picking on you, I'm really wondering about these things.

The other thing I've been curious about is why is it that when people commit to a theme it usually seems to be "people", photos of people; not always, but it seems to be the most common theme.

No, no, I didn't mean for you to rethink your theme. I really am curious about those things. Oh well.
