With the new year rolling around soon, the photo-a-day discussions are starting back up.

I completed a photo-a-day project in mid 2005. I learned a lot from the project. I think the most important thing I learned was to be on the constant lookout for photo opportunities. I also learned to carry a camera with me at all times. I didn't learn a lot more than that because I didn't shoot with any particular themes or ideas for the project. I usually did include photos from any particular project I was working on at the time, but I never had any real theme or idea behind the project.

I'm considering doing the photo-a-day project again in 2007, but I'm trying to think of some additional benefit to gain from it other than what I got out of the first time around.

Time is another issue. When I did my first photo-a-day project, I had a lot more free time than I have now. I'm actually considering working on a 'photo-a-week' with a specific theme rather than a random photo-a-day again.

Is there anyone who would be interested in a photo-a-week where we/you choose a specific theme and make 52 images on that theme over the course of a year?

Ok, ignore the PM I just sent you :-)

I'd be interested in doing this....and I think maybe it wouldn't have to exclude the regular PADders either. For instance, if it was a weekly shot to fulfill the 52 week theme, then those can be done in addition to other PAD shots of the random variety.

I tried to do themes on a monthly basis last year and it was just too much for me...but I think that I could handle one pic a week that spoke to a theme. Sounds like a great idea and I'd love to try!

That sounds like a neat idea, and I would love to follow along and watch some of y'all's.

I just a wee bit much on the ADD side to pay attention (or the dreaded word, focus) on one thing for an entire year.

That said, it is something I might think about, and incorporate with my regular PaD (and just make sure that one of my pics that week was the theme).

Did you have any themes in mind or were you thinking more along the lines of everyone doing their own?

I think everyone should come up with their own theme. It wouldn't be hard to do and it would promote the idea of a 'cohesive body of work' that seems to be elusive here. I'm sure there are people doing themed sets but I don't know who they are or where their images are.

I think that it sounds like a great idea too... it's much more focused and relevant that just taking your 1 pic of the day just so that you don't miss a day. I'd be in trying this... although as Karmat said, I'd have to fight with sticking with a common theme throught the year.

I would like that, very much.

I don't think it would be really difficult to find a theme that you could do for 52 photos. Some of the themes I have worked on, such as My Town and 1000 Faces lend themselves easily to a project like this. I'm trying to think of a new theme myself. I have a couple ideas but haven't decided which to pursue yet.

I will think about it. I have a couple in mind, but need to think about it more.

I did my PAD for 2005-2006...and came away with some awesome shots that I would have never taken if not for PAD. I took this year off but will be starting it again for the year of 2007...should be a good year.

I am interested as well. I will think of some ideas.

I enjoyed writing even though most of it was crap, I still learned a lot about each image I was taking as well as why I take them. I tried more or less to keep it poetic and played with some lyric ideas. You could go for something sord of like that with your theme too...
It would defanetly be interesting and different to see what ya'll come up with..

Alright, I'm in for Photo-A-Week with a theme. I might even have a theme for myself to use.

I would be up for this type of idea. Although I really would like to shoot a photo a day, those can be at my whim. A theme for the week may just work as a goal for the weeks shots...work up to it.

So if you want to do a theme a week (52 themes? or one theme for the whole 52 weeks?) I would gladly dedicate one day a week for a post in this vein. Probably my Sat or Sun posted shot.

Curiosity - how/when/where are we sharing the blog addresses?

I did (or got close to finishing) a PAW project last year. Found it a whole lot more achievable than a PAD, which often seems to degenerate into damn I have to take a picture of something today, here's

I think the idea of one theme for 52 weeks is much better than a new theme each week.

Though please don't quote me on that around week 30 when we are pulling our hair out trying to come up with something creative.

I think I could swing a PAW thing. The PAD or even the 30 day things are just a bit overwhelming after a while. Sign me up for this one.

As a suggestion, I can't express enough how much MORE satisfied I am with my photos at larger sizes. On my photoblog, my images are 900 pixels ... I have a much larger feeling of accomplishment. Sounds silly, but it's true.

I think how you display your project will help motivate you. Check out the photoblog world for online display ideas.

I would like to get in on this as well - I could handle a photo a week. My problem would be picking a theme - could people give suggestions...

I won't. As long as you promise me the same.

I'm interested in working on a theme but probably won't commit to PAWhatever because I know how successful I've been with that method (not at all). I'm still waiting to be inspired by a theme because I want something I'd be interested in doing longterm. We'll see. Suggestions welcome.

That being said, if you have your own webspace, I really like the Pixelpost software. That's what I used for my weak attempt at PAD earlier this year and also I think what hopper uses, yes?

Interestingly, there are 50 categories in the list hopper linked. So, one could make a goal of placing exactly 1 photo in each category (in any order) over the course of the year and still have room for 2 "free studies" (sort of like having 2 get out of jail free cards). :)
