This incredibly fine image by SandyP only managed a 6.2 and 76th place. How is this possible? Words can't describe how excellent I (and many other commenters) think this image is. Average vote of commenters is 8.2...

Robt.

I'm totally baffled at that finish as well. I consider that shot her masterpiece.

ETA: Note that with the exception of myself, all of those post-challenge commenters are highly talented and respected on DPC. If the DPC elite thinks it's brilliant, than how did it miss with so many others?

85th percentile. Hardly worth complaining about.

Commenters scores are always higher. It's an excellent photo, but everyone can go through and reorder the list to their liking. Saying it's a "travesty" seems to me to be indicating that the ones above did not deserve the higher-than-this-one scores.

Seems reasonable to call it out in the forums as a personal favorite, or even use the generic term "underrated" but "scoring travesty"?

... hmm, checked to see if this was edited before or after I posted my comment on it. Phew, you couldn't have included me. ;-)

Hmmmm, "elite" tastes vs. mass apeal - pretty typical disparity, I think.

A great shot indeed but I would never expect that shot to land on the front page. Are we forgetting what does well here?

Btw, I think it would have scored a lot higher if the background didn't appear to be "darkened" in post. That editing isn't clean. Notice the lighter patch at the back of her neck and the "softness" at the edge of her hair and along her face where it flushes against the background, which is most likely due to her use of a mask to darken the background. Regardless of that it's a striking photo but knowing DPC it needs to look perfect and well the editing wasn't. Just my two cents.

Edited for clarity.

Yeah, good point. Sorry about the "elite," by the way...just a term, not meant to alienate anyone :)

Not at all; to say this one deserved a better score (IMO of course) is not to take anything away from a lot of really excellent photos that finished with higher scores. Look, I don't post stuff like this very often, I was just blown away by this picture and amazed it didn't make the top tier, so I thought I'd post it up.

Burn my village if you like :-)

I wouldn't have "expected" it on the front page either, just better than 6.2...

This is an honest question. Can I ask what it is that people find outstanding about this photo?

Hey sweetie....you beat me....I did get a 3. But then again...I did come 72nd...and shouldn't have scored so well...apparently!

I agree. I voted it a 7, but for these reasons. I agree, stunning portrait. But blow that thing up to 8 x 10 and you're going to see the flaws in editing. Would like to see this pre post processing. But, I do agree that when I saw this I thought it was a classic portrait, worthy of a very high score (sans the post processing). The background just seems very edited, darkened, blurred, whatever it was, I like the SOOC feel of a picture more than a post processed feel, which is what I immediately felt when I saw this. Stunning portrait, though. Any average person wouldn't notice the PP errors.

I gave this photo a 6 so in my view the final score was just about right. Yes, it has fine quality to it, but then so do many other photos, so they can't all be in first place.

When I look at this shot and compare it to some of those on the first page, this shot lacks the punch compared to others.

so yeah, all things considered, I don't think it's too much of a travesty. Maybe if the first page photos came in the 9.x range, then it would be more so, but they don't.

I don't know about outstanding, but I find that the subject's nose stands out. ;-) No offense - just being honest - c'mon, you were thinking it, too.

I don't think any offense would be taken - people likely know what you meant. I don't feel alienated. Well, not because of your comment anyway. :)

Reading some of the comments will help you see why people like it. But for me this image speaks for itself it has character and a certain emotive feel like all good portraits should.

Another aspect of it that makes it exceptional in my book is this is a candid shot. It's not in a studio, no special lights, and the subject wasn't even an active participant. Gives great hope to those of us without studios!

I don't think I could appreciate the photo.
First thing that caught my attention was the model's nose.
Then slowly I realize that her middle-finger was in fact her cigarette.
Next I noticed those marks on her neck, which gives me the goose pimples (not sure why)
And that DOF on her hair area feels a little distracting.
I guess I don't see what the elites see.

anything above a 6.0 is a fine image -- according to the voters. But it is a nice, b/w profile. No more, no less. If I was SandyP, I would be happy with the photo and the finish...No need to cause a stir, I say.

I totally agree, as this is a very fine image, and quite differant for Sandy, and I know she would be very pleased with this one, or she would not have entered it. Give her some space, and lets not knock her wonderful work..... She is a very gifted photographer IMO.

It seems to strike an emotional chord at a really deep level with a lot of the commenters. I guess It just doesn't hit the same chord in me. I've had a similar experience the other way where an image has really moved me but nobody else around seemed to respond the same way.

I guess thats one of the best things about art. The experience, knowledge, history and emotions of the viewer all contribute to the experience of appreciating it. Art really is a relationship between artist and viewer.

I'll also extend my congratulations to SandyP for producing such an evocative image. It's a great feeling when alot of people really "get" your work.

Well said Kieran. It reminds me of the old saying "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"

I gave it a 10 but I do agree that the crop so close to the nose, that it accentuates it in an odd way, which made me uncomfortable (can't explain that one) Perhaps it's because that's all that drew me eye...I went straight there and got a little fixed...maybe a little too profile(ish) but still fantastic in every other way once I gave it a chance.

My entry got ignored as I knew it would. I'm having trouble editing for DPC on my new display. Things that look great at home are dark and muddy on other monitors. What to do...what to do?
