yes, composites are allowed.

edit to add: but all of the images used in the composite need to be taken during the challenge timeframe.

As someone who votes more than enters challenges I look forward to what the photographers (and perhaps me too) will present with these extra rulesets.

DPC is moving forwards again after three years. (IMHO)

You won't get disqualified for it, but remember that the voters are encouraged to vote down any entry that doesn't look like a photograph -- so it's probably in your best interest to keep it within reason.

As long as you don't waaaaayyyy overdo it.

I should explain. The approach we're using for the most part is "let the voters decide" when it comes to how much is too much. The expectation is that way overdoing it will produce low scores (does't necessarily mean it will, but for the most part it probably will hold true).

You can't add text. You can't add graphics or clip art. But filters, any and every, are fine (as long as they're not watermarket, as that would be adding text).

I hope I'm right about this. If not, I'm sure someone else will explain it better.

PS - Gary, I thought we had banned you from submitting to challenges, hmmm, must have been wishful thinking on my part ;P

Hmm, what exactly counts as adding "graphics" or "clip art"? Would creating a star field count? What about creating water, adding ripples? What about creating a headphone set on a model? Would creating a brush for it change anything? What if it's used as a texture and not as a prop? Does that change anything? Sorry, I just have lots of questions all of a sudden! :P

I'm with Yanko there. I find it more than a little confusing. How do we draw the line between ADDING graphics via importing them in some way, and CREATING them via filter artifacts?

What I mean: go back tp the old bugaboo discussion of "adding a rainbow" by selecting a series of concentric arches and coloring them via hue/sat: is that now legal in this ruleset? It pretty much has to be, right? And if there is a "rainbow filter" out there, that must be legal too huh? And I apparently can't grab a rainbow off another image pre-challenge dates and add it, right? But suppose I create a new document, create a rainbow from scratch on a white BG, and then select out the white, copy the rainbow, and paste it in? Isn't that a "graphic"? Where/how is the line to be drawn?

I wouldn';t worry about this at all if it weren't for the specter of DQ and the attendant penalties. Idea: can we make DQs in expert editing non-penalty DQs until this is sorted out?

honestly, this is a new to us as it is to you guys and it's going to have to take a few challenges to see where we want the limits drawn.

some entries are probably going to cross the line unintentionally -- some, i'm sure, will blow right by the line and laugh maniacally while they do. this is an experiment...a trial, if you will...and we are going to use it to further hone the ruleset, if needed, in the future.

you guys really shouldn't be so worried about what the SC thinks. you should be worried about what the voters think. if you add something to your photo that LOOKS like clipart but was "technically" done within the rules, what good does that do you? you'll have circumvented the rules (you smart thing you), but you'll probably end up with a crummy score because people thought you were cheating.

edited to add: "penalty" dq's and "non-penalty" dq's will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, as is the norm. there are going to be gray areas for which we don't want to penalize users, but that's at the SC's discretion.

Hmmm I am going to ask a probably stupid question... But (sorry) in spanish there`s no such words that I can translate to understand the meaning of "Clip art"... So.. what is clip art? :P

And... I am thinking that if you know your way around photoshop, the experts editing challenge will be a non-DQ challenge if you take your own pictures and know how to make efects... (Ribbon... here I go!)

While I have no objection to the existence of this rule set (I just don't plan to participate or vote in any challenges that will use it), but I do object to the name, chosen for the rule set. I would prefer it to be named "Digital Art" or "Anything Goes", or something like that.

One does not require any advanced graphical editing skills to be an expert photographer. The title of the "Expert" rule set is misleading.

p.s. I hope the challenges using this set will be quite infrequent; to me, there is no fun in seeing what people do in Photoshop, and what latest snazzy plug-in they acquired.

As i responded to your ticket, "Expert Editing" refers to the allowed editing techniques, not talent or experience as a photographer.

Did I write anything about talent or experience?

"Expert" rule set on a photography site implies expert *photographic* methods. However, this rule set allows for major non-photographic modifications (even though it "discourages" images of non-photographic nature, whatever that means). Calling this "Expert" on this particular site is the wrong choice of a word, IMO.
