Not sure about this, but I would lean in the direction of "no" right now. Good question.

The Expert Editing rules sound interesting for a once-in-a-while sort of thing, but why haven't the filesize limits been increased? It is very difficult to stomp on a complex image as it is to get it under 150kb without having jpeg compression turn it into a mess. Extra/additional/super double top secret editing techniques presumably have the potential to generate even more complex images thus exacerbating the issue.

I have one problem with the "text" rules:
if you use a text-brush to create subtle texture with it - does it count as "texture" and is permitted or as "text" and is forbidden?

If it is readable as text, looks like text, then it would count as text. If you can't tell it is "text", then it's OK.

Kirbic might be able to say this much better.

(and he beat me to it :)

What is defined as readable text? Would random letters (not spelling anything) be considered readable as text? I'm thinking of a photo where letters are "raining" down on an umbrella. I forget who's photo it is.

Is the plan to have these challenges ending on every friday, or is that just a trial basis, or is it going to be random like the other special challenges and speed challenges?

I don't know the answer to that either right now. But I like the idea - can I use it?

Great new ruleset. I guess my question is regarding:

1. You may: use images that do not meet the source or date requirements as textures in your entry if they function specifically as textures and not to circumvent other rules.

2. You may not: use the same original image in more than one challenge.

I assume 2. does not apply to 1.? Or..?

I'm not sure I follow your question. I don't see how they contradict each other.

Can you use the same texture file in more than one challenge?

Got it now. For some reason, my brain was elsewhere when I read your original post, and I thought you'd quoted a completely different rule!

Yes, you may use the same texture in more than one challenge.

We can probably tweak the wording on the rule to better reflect that, but based on the responses already provided here, I'm reasonably sure we'll process the rule in that spirit (one of us will post here if that changes).[/quote]

For now, challenge using this set of rules will not be scheduled regularly, but be an occasional event.

Legible (recognizable) characters, one or more, are "text." So your idea would fly only if the letters were in the original capture(s). Not added in post. So the concept would be very doable!

Putting the "text" in "texture," so to speak.

If I can read it, my vote will be to DQ. If it's not recognizable as text, it's fine. Conversely, if you hand-write some text with the pencil tool, for example, it's still subject to DQ.

We have no plans to change the "core rotation" of Tuesday/Sunday night challenges. These rules will be used for selected "off-cycle" challenges, including but not limited to speed, Free Study, and other extra challenges.

Hmm... what about a certain doctor? I'd imagine his signatures are completely illegible. :P

Sneezy gets DQ'd regardless. It's no coincidence that "spite" and "smite" differ by only one letter! ;-)

Any chance for a filesize increase with the new rules to accomodate the increase in creativity?

It's possible. It was discussed, but it looks like the issue might have slipped through the cracks before a decision was finalized on it.

In short, I can't rule out a change, but I can't promise one either.

There has been no firm conclusion on what image size or file size will be "the norm" for Expert challenges. It will probably be 720px to start, and of course the 200kb file size to go along with it. It could change in the future.

Edit: I see the rules still reference 640px. We'll ask L to update it prior to scheduling a challenge.

So we're all on the same page

You may
- while photographing your entry, use any post processing feature of your camera that does not violate any rule.
?

(not for the new uber-rules, rather the two old rulesets).

Uh-oh... Langdon will prolly have to correct that. It comes up for me, so I'd guess it needs it's "public access" turned on. L is off line until late this evening, so we'll have to sit tight.

His addiction to the Wii is starting to bear fruit, LOL! :p

This was not added, for the reasons discussed in the previous thread.

I missed those reasons ...

(running back to previous thread ...)

ETA

Ran back to previous thread and didn't see reasons, perhaps I'm looking in the wrong thread?

Anyone care to point me to the appropriate thread?

TIA.

That thread may be the best place to discuss this, so people don't get confused as to what rule set is being discussed.

Thanks Terry. :)

The real rules page is live, so I've changed the link.

Also, the rules will be changed to allow a 720x720, 200KB limit.

Wow, that's unfortunate. I hope it comes with the option to automatically filter from voting all portrait-oriented photos for those of us whose won't be able to view them in their entirety.
