I'm just curious to see how many people thought that my entry in the Science challenge was actually a rocket:

I have to admit that I was rather proud of this idea, as it came to me as kind of a last minute idea for the challenge... and I'll also be glad to admit that if someone else had submitted it, I would have fallen for it, too :)

WOW. I recall wondering why the nozzles didn't have the classic venturi shape to it, but didn't give much thought beyond that. I figured it was a large scale model rocket. The thought that it was an upside down smokestack NEVER occured to me. Excellent imagination on your part. Having it slightly off vertical also helps cloud the reality.

Kudos!!!

This is how they normally look, by the way :)

Ya got me. I thought it was unlikely that you were able to get a shot of a rocket in the challenge dates. I shoulda DQ'd it then you would have had the pleasure of submitting the original! Great eye Alan!

Alan, you rock. I thought it was some kind of rocket. Good deception. :)

I gave you 10. And yes, I also thought it was a real rocket :-))) I couldn't figure out how could you get so close to a rocket blasting off. Silly me.

at first glance I thought it was a rocket, but the more I looked at it the more I thought it wasn't a rocket, but I didn't know what it was.

Just to show that I can actually take a photo of a real rocket... A couple years ago I attended the launch of the space shuttle Atlantis (May 2000). I was able to view it from the press area. I have to say that, with the exception of witnessing the birth of my daughter, it was the most incredible thing I have ever seen:

I didn't think it was a real rocket, but i did wonder if it was a toy or something. I figured you would have had to have one heck of a telephoto to get that close a shot.

Great imagination!!

I fell for it hook, line and sinker. Got me thinking about not hearing of any launches in the news lately. An original and unique idea, excellently shot, -- the kind we all dream of.

Great optical illusion Alan. I won't tell you what I thought it was at first but it wasn't mentioned here.

I thought it was a photo of China's first man into space. You had me fooled. Nice going.

Very Clever.

I was suspicious because there wasn't a great deal of light coming out of it, but yeah you fooled me too.

Kind of scary that all that smoke is coming out of the stack. As the 3-eyed fish comes out of the water ;)

Hey, don't make fun of "Blinky!" (I'm assuming you're a fellow Simpsons fan :)

Alan ya fooled me for about 10 seconds! But like I commented you, I love these kinds of pics that get people thinking "how did he do that", was a great pic, and should have done way better!

It's real.

Might be a good challenge. Something or someone that could be a inhabitant of the Simpsons. Maybe a editable speed challenge for Halloween or something.

Every Simpsons fan awaits Halloween time for the Treehouse of Horrors episode.

I fully admit I thought that was a rocket, and was wondering what sort of lens etc might have got such a fantastic shot. I thought it was a wonderful shot ..... of a rocket.

Now I've seen what it really is (d'oh!) I think I like it even more. ood work there *laugh*

Great shot Alan! I too was wondering how you got the shot...

I haven't seen any smoke stacks like that at power plants here in Australia, but yes, yours does look rocket-like!
