A “friend” of mine has a job offer that will allow them to move from Arizona to the Seattle area. Why would anyone want to move to Seattle?

Never fear the unknown. Move and try it. If you don't like it you can always move back or go where you wanna go or be. I'd do it just for the experience alone. Then again I have no reason to stay where I am either so I guess thats what would sway my decision if I were in your shoes.

Seattle has some really great people. There's a lot of culture there. The music scene is pretty huge for all kinds of music. Seattle pretty much has everything you'd want in a city in small doses.

Traffic there blows, but I've heard from people who actually live there that once you learn the roads traffic isn't bad at all.

And it doesn't rain constantly like everyone says. Coming from Arizona your friend is going to say it rains all the time, but the weather there is actually quite pleasant.

They don't lie about the weather

But there's something to said against the sun shining every day and worrying about dust storms sandblasting the paint from your car.

I've heard some fantastic things about Seattle. It would be similar to Denver I think, except tons of water nearby, less mountains (but plenty close by), and more rain. But the rain doesn't infiltrate life like many suspect. There are rainy seasons, including Winter, so you get a lot of snow and clouds during the cold months, when people don't go outdoors anyway. Plus, photographically speaking, the Northwest is infinitely better than AZ.

That might be a stretch - the American Southwest is a dream destination for a lot of landscape photographers...

Depends what you are wanting out of life. Both have their advantages.

Living in Seattle, I'll give you the quick rundown. Seattle actually gets less average rain than Boston. However, 9 months of the year you can't see the sun and it does rain, but it is an all day drizzle not a hard rain. Thunderstorms are rare in the Seattle area. Very few people carry umbrellas.

Going just over the mountains for 2 1/2 hours you have weather similiar to the Midwest. Lots of snow, little rain, hot summers, deserts (sand dunes), tons of thuderstorms, and farmland as far as the eye can see. Eastern Washington is as different as you can get weather and population wise.

Traveling throughout most of the US, I think Seattle has more activities in a 2 hour drive than most cities across the US. Beaches, rain forests, mountains (largest in the continental US), islands, deserts. Great place for skiing, fine dining, and entertainment (music, theatre, art scene, etc.) As far as in city activities, think of it as a little "Chicago". In terms of outdoor activities think of it as Denver (but everything is closer).

As you can tell I love the place. Yes, the overcast skies gets a bit old in the midst of winter, but it just makes you appreciate the sunny days all the more. Plus in Seattle people have a plethora of outfits, unlike Phoenix where the same outfit will work all year.

Jayson got it about right. That is what I was trying to briefly convey.

Gordon...yeah, i shouldn't have used infinitely, but as jayson points out in his 3rd paragraph, that is why I said what I said. You have a bit of everything..

And to put a shameless plug in for Canada...its about 1.5 hours away from Seattle (?)There is also ferries going to different islands that are really interesting.

Friday Harbour for instance is quite cool (I seem to remember this picture looking better..oh well)

Just to keep our geographic distances correct it is about 5 hours to the rain forest and 2 1/2 hours to Canada (at least to a city)...

Depends on what part of the rainforst you go to. A 45 minute ferry ride over than another 45 minute drive has you pretty deep in the National forest. Now if you are specifically talking about Hoh, then yes 5 hours. I agree, Canada is about 2 1/2.

I did just the opposite. Two years ago we moved from Portland, Oregon to Prescott, Arizona.
The PNW (Pacific Northwest) is beautiful. You would never tire of the green, the beauty, the lakes, streams, rivers, and ocean. The fly fishing is fantastic. Seattle is very exciting, museums, theater, art, music, food, shopping- trendy everything.
The people are very nice, kicked back and friendly.
The weather is the pits. We ride motorcycles and hated the rain.

Not for the weather....I'm freezing today! However, the area has everything. It's beautiful, the scenery is a photographer's dream. Culture, Food, Music, Recreation...

The traffic is horrible. One of the worst in the nation.

Before I moved here, I was warned about the rain. No problem. What I wasn't told was that I wouldn't see the sun for 9 months, it's very hard to take until you see your first summer.

Seattle is freaking sweet. I dunno about the 9 months thing, the winter months are the only ones I seem to remember ever being consistently gray. Spring and fall it always clears up at least every once in a while. This past summer I don't think it rained more than a day or two in three months, mostly it was sunny and warm. Plus theres the sound, several lakes, and all kinds of great mountains. I left when I went off to college so I haven't done a whole lot of commuting in the area but there are only a couple places where the traffic seems to get REALLY bad and its usually pretty predictable.

The best part about Seattle is you are only 3 hours from Oregon and the real Gem of the Northwest. Oregon doesn't have sales tax either. We love to have those in neighoring states come spend their money here.

:D

There are about 2 dozen DPCers in and around Seattle. For the record, that's about the same number as in all of Iceland!

My company is based in the Seattle area, so I'm up there quite a bit.

It is a cool city and the surrounding areas are beautiful. The folks are nice, too. Skiing/snowboarding is also close by.

From what I have read, Dallas (and many other U.S. cities) gets more annual rainfall than Seattle. In Dallas, it can all come down in a short period of time, whereas in Seattle, it's a regular, but not too heavy rainfall.

I was just joking ...

I have a friend that lives in Portland and I have been up to Seattle a time or two. Beautiful no doubt! It's seafood heaven! Great golf! Went crabbing in Newport that was too much fun. :-)

I've travelled extensively and IMO the Seattle area (and the general Pacific Northwest) is one of the most beautiful locations on the planet (2nd only to Iceland, ofcourse). ;o)

That's why I moved here 8 years ago, and will likely stay until the end-of-days (mine, anyway). Had I been a DPC'er back then, I'd likely have known better and been an Icelandic transplant instead.

I agree with everything previously stated:
- the rain really isn't that bad,
- yes, traffic sucks,
- great people (a ton of DPC'ers),
- lots to do,
- fanastic photo ops.

What more do you need ? (ok... that's MINUS the traffic)

There's a reason the greens are so rich in Seattle - the rain ... ALL THE TIME ... keeps life growing!

Actually the proximity to Canada (even more specifically Victoria) is one of the many things I'm excited about for our possible move to Washington... more specifically Everett.
Edit: we have checked the ferries going to Canada already so we know it would be an easy day trip.

Does anyone know anything about Marysville (North of Everett)... would love some 'insider' info about it. They have the best housing prices I can find in the Everett area... there's gotta be a reason! :-)
