You have to spoon feed some voters here. Had it had a head in it, some of those 1 -2 voters might have "gotten" it.
By spoon feed I mean you sometimes have to slap them in the face with a concept.

It represents excellent photography as is. No gimmicks.
Unfortunately, it's not over saturated or over post processed or over filtered enough for this site. |

Yeah, so are personal attacks... it's not like we are looking at a low scoring photog complaining about voters. Nor is it a shot of a $2 car on a $10 Bill.

| I thought this was one of the more creative shots and voted high. Nice work. My monitor is calibrated as well and I don't see any solid blacks, but who says you "always" need a solid black. |

| I read the whole thread and then looked at the image. Even knowing it was a fencing mask, it was hard for my mind to say "this is something you wear on your head". I think it has something to do with the way you lit it. In my opinion the lighting is an *amazingly* wonderful piece of work, technically, but it just makes the image a bit more abstract and for those of us without familiarity with the object, it's a bit harder to identify. |

| The image simply doesn't look like headwear. If it weren't for the title, I'll bet the vast majority would think it's a sieve or other type screen. Had you shot a model holding a foil up to the mask, it could have scored much higher. |

I wish I knew who started the unwritten rule that a photo has to stand alone without the title. If that's the case, there shouldn't be a title required. It all boils down to the voters not taking enough time to really evaluate the photos properly and the fact that they vote down things they don't like. Oh no, a flower....1, a kid.....1, a cat.....1.
Stupid voting method, if you ask me. Your prejudices shouldn't affect your vote. (Somewhat off topic and on soapbox. :)) |

| I think if the site forced viewers to slow down a bit and actually LOOK at a picture it would help. i.e If the option to vote wasn't available until 10 seconds after the page loads. I know I am guilty of this myself. I think an honest assessment of a photo should take more than a minute but of course thats impractical when voting on 100+ images. Still, taking just a bit more time to look at what people put together would be beneficial to both the voters and the submitters. |

I think in this case both the photo AND the title flew over people's heads. Unfortunately, instead of just trying to meet the challenge he tried to exceed it by being creative (god forbid) and well that was his downfall. To do what Scalvert said would certainly have helped his score but is otherwise pointless if you're trying to be creative and original, hence the dilemna. That's why many go for the most common cliches so to do well in the challenges.

I thought it was a great shot, but wondered how many people would realise what it was. I even commented on that aspect when I voted. Even I had to look twice and I was the second best fencer in my state when I was a kid, because the context gives no clues as to what the object is (excluding the title, of course).
Like has been suggested, a title of "Fencing Helmet" or similar would definitely got you a higher score.

Jemison, your entries have always been superb and this one is no exception. DPC voters tend to vote on the subject more than composition or technical quality. Your relatively obscure subject doomed this entry.
I would like to see a vote tally on each challenge that consisted of only the votes by a team of recognized excellent photographers participating on this site. A team of perhaps 10 whose vote is included in the normal tally but also extracted and presented separately. This would be a valuable aid for all the DPC community, to develop their skills in evaluating photographs. This could be done informally in the forums, just needs someone to organize the selected team. |

It's not a bad photo and it's not a great photo.
And as is with most images here, i think they score about right.
But what I find hard to understand is how someone who has been a member since Sep. 22 2004 and entered 55 challenges can be surprised by voting methods and patterns!
I don't always agree with what people vote for me, but i certainly expect lots of people to not like or not get my photo.

Left this comment on the photo:
This is an under-rated photo - it's striking, with great texture, light pouring out of the mask. I think that it would be even better with a bent foil touching the mask, with the title "Touche'!" This would probably reduce the number of low votes and people that didn't get it, and the extra element would tell a story. |
