The colors on this are pretty much unmanipulated. There's a slight overall boost in saturation, but not that extreme a one. No color shifting at all. Shot at 200mm half an hour before sunrise, 5 second exposure.

you get some of the best sun shots there bear. very nicely done.

Its kind of amazing to me how the colors are so much more magnificant before the sun shows its face and usually well after it goes down. This morning I too was blessed with an amazing sunrise that nearly caused me to be late for work lol. I took a couple shots from my window but couldn't stop watching it so I quickly put on some shoes and ran down to a better location. I started photographing it from about 30 minutes prior to actual sunrise to about 10 minutes after.

Again, great work, as usual.

What amazes me is that someone is actually AWAKE at dawn ;)

Your usual superb work, Bear :D

Spectacular shot!! The colors are awesome and what makes it even more amazing is the lack of editing!!!!

It does take a certain amount of willpower & dedication, LOL. I don't actually get up before dawn; what I do is just don't go to bed until after dawn, see? You can do that when you're retired and live alone. So if my weather sense and the tide tables tell me today's dawn is going worth working with, why then I'll just stay up and edit pictures or whatever all night, and drive off an hour and a half or so before sunrise and head down-cape with Karma riding shotgun.

Karma loves our dawn expeditions, she thinks they are exciting :-)

I also find it impossible to get up before sunrise, might explain why I only have like 2 sunrise images compared to the many sunset images. Don't have any problem staying up till sunrise though.

If you live far enough north you just have to wait 'till December. I think sunrise in Minneapolis will be after 8 am, of course sunset is about 4:30 pm

And if you're a guest at Bear's house, he makes you get up WAY early just to go out and see this stuff. It's worth it, though. Very nice place to live, I might add. And yes, I'll get back there one of these days, Robert, but I'm still working on jet lag (which in German is "jet lag" by the way) from the trip over. Tell Karma hi for me.

That would make it much easier to get sunsrise shots. The sun comes up at 5:00 and sets at about 18:40 down here at this time of year.

Hey, I don't MAKE you do anything; all guests have their options. If you wanna be a lazy slugabed, that's A-OK with me; less competition for the light :-)

curious as to why you'd boost the saturation at all? there's obvious posterization, which i suspect would have been there before you boosted it. half the time I have to desaturate sunrise/sunset pics just to make them look 'natural'. Photographing direct sunlight was way easier with film :)

I did it in a hurry, it's a throwaway shot for me. Boosted the saturation to pop the foreground a little, didn't pay much attention to the sky when I was doing that. If you look closely, you'll see the image is nowhere near sharp, so it's not printable. This was shot at 200mm and 5 seconds, I was focusing in the dark, and I didn't catch it right. I just popped it up here 'cuz the colors were so naturally unreal, so to speak :-)

I have other shots from this session that are very different, I'm holding onto those for a while :-)

I saw the sunrise myself this morning. Unfortunately my eyes weren't in focus either...I was just getting home from the night before :)

Pretty colors, the foreground is awful harsh though. I hope we get to go to the ocean when I'm in MA for thanksgiving, but with my luck it'd be crappy light and the worst day for pictures ever.

What counts as "slight boosting"? +50? haha, just bustin' chops. Great shot Robert. I see your Tone Mapping at work.
