I don't know if it's still open for public access, but an amazing (and kinda scary) adventure is to walk through Hezehiah's Tunnel.

If you have a car, you can go around the whole country in two weeks -- it's really small. Eilat is a resort town at the southern tip, on the Red Sea, and is famous for its scuba-diving. The Dead Sea and the Old City of Jerusalem are probably the other don't-miss sites. Haifa, on the northern coast, is one of the prettiest cities, and it's no longer under daily rocket attacks.

If you have any hope of ever visiting any other muslim countries, with the exception of Jordan and Egypt, don't let them stamp your passport. Ask for the visa as a separate document, this is a common thing so they won't look at you weird.

Remember that although most of the western world is at peace with Israel, most of the eastern and Muslim countries are and will forever be at war with Israel. Remember the saying "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", well, if you are friends with Israel you are the enemy to Israel's enemies.

That is why separate visa's are a good thing. Blend in and don't standout as a visitor as much as possible.

My instructor is going to Israel next week I think. She has no worries it seems.

Maybe a little defeatist - but an Israel entry/exit stamp is usually good justification for a new passport if you wanted to travel more widely in the ME in the near future (there is a lot to see).

i wouldn't think that would be a problem. just about every single person carries a gun, so it wouldn't matter much

Photographically - a polarising filter is pretty useful for those deep blue skies of the region.

Some banners to complain about the use of chemical and banned weapons on civilian populations?

maybe just some spray paints...

edit to add maybe not:

Old man: You paint the wall, you make it look beautiful.

Banksy: Thanks

Old man: We don't want it to be beautiful, we hate this wall, go home.

Graduated neutral density filter comes to mind.

More storage. Like money - can't have too much.

Do a google search for "travel safety tips"

Also, the State Department has briefings available on-line.

It's a not a bad thing to stand out, generally. My Israeli friends, who speak English fluently because their parents are American, speak English in Arab areas because they say they are treated nicer than if they speak Hebrew.

I've been to Israel a couple of times, by the way, and it's not as dangerous as the media would lead you to believe. Just be intelligent about it. Don't go to places where large groups of people gather and there's no one checking people as they come in. Don't ride the bus. Many of the touristy sites are completely empty because people are afraid to go, which also makes them pretty safe. I highly recommend Masada (near the Dead Sea) and the Israel Museum (in Jerusalem). There are some pics on my (BADLY in need of updating) website: //www.bramlage.net/Israel.htm

Absolutely not a defeatist, several thousand years of history and preent day issues, well the big IF, if you believe in the Bible then it will not end until the end. So should that be a defeatist? NOPE, should that scare people from visiting? Nope. Heck I've travelled the world, lived in a half dozen countries and visited extensively in many dozens more throughout the west, east, south and an little big the Canadian North.

If you are scared to meet people in there own environment and cities then I almost feel sad for that person. Get out and enjoy the earth and all the people in it. Violence ... oh ya but alot more peace that war unless you are in the war zones.

best of luck and enjoy the visit. Get out and away from the tourist hotels and tourist traps, walk the streets and enjoy everything you see.

Defeatist, hell no, I'm one of the most optimistic people around because I know that there are great people everywhere and I can't do much about fate.

I was commenting on your use of "forever".

I heard a joke by a rabbi in which he commented on a conversation with a muslim friend, and the muslim said that he thought that peace in Palestine would take hundreds of years to come about. The rabbi said don't be ridiculous, hundreds? - it will take thousands of years.

Ya I know, it would be nice if there could be peace there ... BUT if there is, and it lasts, has the end already been here? Humm we all wish for peace but also many feel that it will not be until the end. I guess forever can mean a lot of things.

You will need MORE than 2 x 512 MB SD cards, get one of these Portable hard drives like the Epsons or Wolverines or FlashTraxs. Use common sense when it comes to safety. Try to go to Jordan if you have time, Petra in Jordan is a must-see. The market in Jerusalem's old quarter is a must see too...Sunscreen SPF 45 at least...it's hot there!

Now that is an inspirational idea. And one I firmly believe in.
