at the risk of it already being done...

Holiday Settings (like in the commercials). i.e. Grandparents showing up with presents, mom in the kitchen threatening dad with a wooden spoon, dad tucking his tail and running away, kids posing for a pic by the tree, someone cutting the turkey next to someone who just cut the cheese... you get the picture.

whaddya think?

11/14/2006 01:13:56 PM · #2
can spoon be replaced with knife and mom threatening everyone to get the &^%^%$ out of the kitchen???

Seriously, I like the idea

really like the idea & for people that don't celebrate christmas there's lots of other holidays they could take a picture representing...

..... The Family Gathering
this would avoid sectarian issues and include events like birthdays, wedding receptions, leaving it open to the photographer to do Chrismas or Hanukkah or celebration of choice.

It could just be "Christmas commercial." That way you don't have to celebrate the holiday just reinact what they do in the commercials.

I don't celebrate Christmas either, but I can still go outside and take a picture of some beautiful snowy meadow which would still fit I think.

The challenge could just be family, but have the challenge during the big holiday swing.
This challenge is always tough for those in the southern hemisphere who celebrate the birth of santa in the middle of the summer :D.

Doesn't snow much here when it's over 30 degrees centigrade...

Wow
whats wrong with this world? Okay sure some of you dont celebrate Christmas but to say - dont do a "Christmas" challenge because some people dont celebrate it? We're coming up to the Christmas season and sure some of you will call it the hippie holidays or whatever term is PC these days. But seriouisly the whole reason we have this time of year is because of Christ-mas. Whether you celebrate or not, Christmas trees and garland and lights and presents and time off work - are all there becuase of Christ and celebrating his birth.
So why NOT have such a challenge. Show people a portrait of what you DO do on CHRISTmas.
It could actually be a funny challenge for you.
Probably something like a man in a white undershirt with a bathrobe on sitting there drinking a beer all alone or something.
I dont mean that as an insult but - to some that could be the holidays or show the depression of those alone during this season or something.

Snow at this time of year??? Its +8 outside. I'm not saying it shouldn't be done just not at this time of year. Hell even I'd go out in the middle of july to buy christmas crap if there was a challenge called christmas in july but just not coming into the christmas season. Don't get me wrong I can shoot something for christmas but I'm sure it wouldn't do well in a challenge or on this site. Personally I hate christmas and want nothing to do with it.

Actually its a peagan ritual adopted by the catholic church way back when.

edit to change holiday to ritual. And to not turn this thread into a religous debate.

Bugger that.. Just do a CHRISTMAS challenge.. and when some other religion/cultures celebratory event comes along, lets do a challenge addressing that, that way we can all learn a little bit about other cultures and learn to love one another and maybe promote world peace and shit like that. And if we forget some religions event, then dont panic, its doesnt mean we dont like you, it means we didnt know! Correct us on it and lets move on... Its all this touchy feely BS thats makes the world a sadder place.

After me everybody "Well I wish it could be christmas everydaaaaaay"

If we eat Chinese food and go to a movie, we should take a photograph of that?

Thats a really good point, if we had a Holiday challenge, which encompassed what we do on the day, the winner would more than likely be a photo demonstrating the `Christmas` celebration.. If you had a picture like what you mentioned (chinese and movie) it wouldn't score well with the DNMC police.. Thats why it has to be more clearly defined into what actual celebration such as Christmas and, ummmm, all the other ones.. :-)

Thank you!! I absolutely agree, I think it could be quite educational & fun to learn about holidays/events/etc that you didn't really know about before! :)

I just had a big long post and accidentally hit back with my mouse and lost it....

The jist.. It's not the holiday people want to avoid. It's the debate that naturally comes with it. Two things to avoid talking about on the internet are Politics and Religion.

I looked back and last year they did Holiday Catalog. I didn't see any other holiday challenges. If you look through that challenge you'll notice that there were some well placed entries that had nothing to do with Christmas. The vast majority of them are directly Christmas related though, but that's because there are a ton of people who celebrate it. The website will take on a typically Christmas Holiday feel even without a Christmas challenge.

Remember this is a photography website that wants to include as many people as possible and maintain a pleasant environment. When you're in the business world you don't celebrate Christmas, Honica, etc. You celebrate all the "Holidays." "Holidays" is a pretty safe way of allowing many ideas and lifestyles into an event without bringing in the nasty debates and arguments that come along with specific religious holidays.

I agree no need for religious debate. The plain fact of the matter is this: Christmas IS a huge holiday for business as well as many people. Its on 63% of the world's calendars, therefore being the majority.
There is no need to exclude anyone. By why the need to avoid it. The challenges here range in everything from sultry to sad. So why not have a challenge? Call it the holidays if you insist. Im just saying to the ney sayers... lets have a challenge for this big time of year.

Well, once we had a Challenge for Tacky Christmas Decorations that was quite popular.

Although I remember the entry I found, some tired halloween pumpkins spraypainted red & green, didn't go over too well with the voters. (Not tacky enough?)

Oh, that sounds like fun! If you don't have your own tacky decorations there's always the neighbors or random people within driving distance. And KMart ;-) I enjoy silly creative opportunities like that.

Or if you want to do the non-specific holiday thing you could make it tacky holiday decorations, or extravagant holiday food, or holiday traditions you'd like to do away with ... lots of choices, really. Not that I should be trying to find something else to do that time of year {rolls eyes}.

I agree. Those who don't want to participate don't have too. I didn't get upset when there was the 'Trains & Railroads' challenge even though I live on an island..LOL.
