I've been to Greg Allman's house.
I've seen most of the great Georgia rock bands in person in small clubs.
I love deep fried catfish..and yes, cheese grits with them is awesome.
I know the difference between y'all and all y'all.

IE Not Florida"Made up of winter birds and no sweet tea" And Texas "well they still think Texas is a Country" So your left with Alabama, Mississippi Georgia, and Tennessee and the Carolinas. Virginia and Kentucky Don't count either. They speak funny..

And Louisiana doesn't count? It seemed pretty Suthren when I lived there! (3 years courtesy of Uncle Sugar.)

If you want to hear real Southern all you have to do is listen to podcast 6 (part 1) "an interview with Southern Gentleman". If I don't sound country; no one does -yall.

I'm just happy that not once during the Podcast did you say "Get 'er Done!" :-)

Ignorance is not limited to the south, thank you. ;)

When I was twelve, we travelled "out west." While in a restaurant in California somewhere, I ordered the standard cheeseburger, french fries, and a Coca-cola. I had to order it three times, just because the waitress wanted to hear me "tawlk." She asked where we were from, I told her Western North Carolina, in the Appalachian Mountains. She nodded. When she returned with our drinks, she got down in my face and asked me, very slowly, "Do you wear shoes all the time?"

I was twelve. The year was 1982. In total disbelief, I simply said, "What do you think?"

Fast forward to 1999. Vacationing in Niagra Falls, one of the top tourist spots in the nation (which I only point out because you would think they would be used to different people coming through), a waitress looked at me and said, "You're not from around here are you? You're from the South?"

Me: "Yea, you do take Confederate money, don't you?"

Her look was priceless. I think she was actually afraid we would leave her confederate money as a tip. :)

Then, there was the trip to Moscow, Russia where I taught (or tried to) the interpreters to speak Russian with a mountain accent. :) They would tell me a word, and I would say it with as "deep" a drawl as I could, then they would imitate me. We laughed for hours.

Another way to know if you are truly southern is if you can tell the difference between several different accents. WNC, Eastern TN, Western VA, WV and part of KY sound similar (but still different). Coastal SC sounds different from upstate SC, and south GA is different from Northern GA. (Atlanta, as has been pointed out is different all together). etc. etc.

The timing is so perfect..... I'm trying to find a flashlight because I let the dog out to pee and she found a 'possum in the garden shed. Now she (the dog) is barking her head off & probably waking the neighbors.

I have a very strong southern accent. I hate when I travel! I just get stared at.
I was born, raised and still live in rural tennessee. My entire county only has two red lights. A few years ago my bank was a trailor.

I hate grits.
Fried chicken, corn bread and white beans has to be my favorite meal!!
I only drink tea sweet and cold.
I had rather be bare footed. I only wear shoes when I am going somewhere.
I drink out of Mason Jars.
I drink beer from a bottle.
I like pork brains with my eggs.
I have eaten squirrel, deer, raccoon, rabbits, and any other woodland creature you can think of. Frog legs are awesome, BTW.

So I guess you could say I am a country girl.

I live in west central Georgia next to Alabama only separated by the Chattahoochee. I guess my accent is truly southern. I don't mind the jokes about the south and living in the south can be a fun place to live.

No, I've never eaten opossum! Yuck, nasty little bastards and that one was - still is, didn't get it out of the shed - larger than my dog! Never eaten 'coon, but did try gator a few times, not too fond. Never tried squirrel and hate deer meat. Snake?? Ick! As a pet, yes, as a meal, NO. :P

If you've never gotten into a big mess of crawfish, you are missing a real delicacy. That's some good eatin'.

You know your Southern when Bill, Chair, Bath, Beer and Hey are all 2-syllable words. :)

OK to answer the grits question actually all forms are fine but add a slice of fatback if you really want flavor. No not possum but rattle snake gator and chittlins I have. Oh and pigs feet. Ok let me see if I can bring back memories. Wine bought in a pint. Home brew from a two liter plastic bottle. Spot lighting..."if I have to say what for don't ask" More watts in your CB than in your microwave.

Mountain oysters, yuck!! I learnt bout them when I lived in Virginia. O.k., that was a fake accent, I'm a northerner who has lived in the south for 9 years. I have eaten grits, gator, deer and love sweet tea does that qualify?
