Just as long as you aren't looking in a mirror... :)

You may want to consider that some might vote your image down because it doesn't contain an actual reflection. Personally, I think it's a good angle and that thought occurred to me... but then I would have to go out and find some twins.

We are probably going to see a lot of water reflections, not much of that around my neighborhood :( no rain either...

A shadow of something is not considered a reflection right? Has to retain the image albeit color texture etc, right?

Looks like I'm going to have to skip this one...

I have twin sons age 17 that dont mind posing but I thought the voters would surely say DNMC because there is no actual reflection.. but the idea did cross my mind.. i think its great but the voters hate me.

As I am new to DPC a I would value any criticism that all could provide. I ask for this in order to improve. Thank you. Robertted

This is a very valid point. I noticed an couple of entries that took a similar approach to the one mentioned. I applaud the creativity, but I am a stickler for the challenge criteria. If the image does not contain a reflection, it qualifies as a DNMC (did not meet challenge) entry and the highest score it can get from me is a 3 (and to get the 3, it better be an incredible image as I typically give DNMC's an automatic 1). Just one voter's opinion here.

My entry is close to 100% reflection and it's running at around 3.6.

Enter any damn thing, I reckon.

It would seem that in the end a LRIL (Landscape Reflected In Lake) is going to score the highest. By and large people have submitted LRIL pics, reflections in eyes and reflections in large city buildings: these seem to be the pictures people have gone with...very traditional, not too many risks, not a huge amount of creativity or daring. What I'm seeing at the moment is a large collection of very fine reflected landscapes. A bit disheartening as I specifically went for a non-landscape picture thinking that Different would be rewarded. Just hovering around a 4.5 at the moment, so there goes that belief. It's going to be a matter of looking for the best one technically I suppose. It's so hard to choose from close on 400 entries that all run along the same lines. I WISH there was more diversity in composition and subject.

I don't think this one

took the red because of the transparency in it. No transparency at all, however it is an amazing photo.

By the way, the description was...
Use transparency to create the impact of your photo this week.

I hear your points and find my image in the same position as yours. My entry is almost 100% reflection (literal light reflection) and is not doing well in the challenge.

As I see it, it is the job of the photographer as artist to both interpret the challenge and then to produce an image that speaks to 'reflections w/o mirrors'. That could using reflection in the literal - be it an image of a reflection of a tree or mountain on a lake, or an image of twins set up to look like they are reflecting through a mirror, or a more interpretive stance of the word reflection.

It is the job of the photographer as artists to make the audience see the reflection. Clearly, my entry did not show what the audience wanted. I used approximately 100% light reflection and put no frame of reference in the picture to make the audience see the reflection- my bad.

Well, wouldn't it be a reflection of genes, dna or something like that :)
Reflection of the other.

The challenge was to 'creatively photograph a reflecting surface that is not a mirror while keeping your camera out of the shot'; it is very disappointing to see how few entries have taken on board the word 'creatively'!

I have a feeling that my shot is in your opinion a non-creative shot :) I would love to hear your ideas on creative here. And no, I am not being ironic, I am simply interested.

most people wouldn't recognize a reflection
if they were looking at it

(sorry .. i just had tooo)

there is diversity in the challenges but not recognizable in the 3 sec you might get to show off your image -
c'est la vie

But they are quite pretty. :D I imagine the 'eye candy' shots will rise to the surface when all is said and done. 'Creative' can sometimes get lost when voters don't slow down to actually look before voting. :(

Yes, I have a horse in this race and forgot to follow my own advice (see above). :P Oh well, there's always next time.

mine is creative (i think) it is not original (not even original for me) but much more creative than your normal lake shot and it is only at 5.3. often it doesn't matter what the description says the voters vote on what they want. now if i could just figure that out ahead of time:)

This is part of my problem with challenges: do I care what voters like if they continue to rate highly the images I don't? I think I enter now just for something to do. I quite enjoy it when shots I like get slated for not being part of the current DPC aesthetic, but find just a pocket of appreciation from one or two commenters. That means much more.

Erm... my score is 4.4 by the way, so I'm more bothered now at possibly not winnning the brown!

I feel exactly like you: mine was the "glass blowing" in the Bokeh challenge: I knew I was streeeeetching it, but it was such fun taking those shots, and the results were hysterical...and guess what? Someone marked it as a favourite pic... that was such a great pat on the shoulder and it really didn't matter that I came in low on the score board. I look forward each week to the new challenge...just for ME. I like the challenge of a little project and it's all helping me to learn how to become a more skilled photographer for my own purposes. I want to be able to take the best darn pics of the world around me to keep as a personal diary/record of my life and my family's...it would be nice to be acknowledged along the way by the DPC community, but it's a stimulating journey anyway. Maybe there should be a ribbon for the one that most pushes the boundaries in each challenge????
11/09/2006 08:35:38 AM · #22
Oh and this is fascinating: with my "Glass Blowing" that really stretched the criteria of bokeh, I came in at 4.1. Got a few DNMC comments too. My present pick is completely a CREATIVE reflection...couldn't be anything but a reflection AND creative, and it's hanging in at 4.5??? Too much wresting with the nitty gritty of scores...let's just have fun!

"Gorgeous shapes, and a creative take on reflections, as the challenge called for." - a comment about my image in the reflections challenge

This is why I enter. My score is hovering about 4.9 but at least someone 'got it'.

Well, I'm sure the voters noticed the many, many... many landscape shots with water reflexion. Who didn't expect it? I certainly wasn't surprised. I was a bit put off by the sheer number of people that took the easy way out though.

This challenge was the third in its series, I would have expected much more that ducks in a pond and trees with water. I haven't been around here for long, but seeing some of the past challenges made me hope for something more, and I think that this view is shared by many, by the looks of the scores.

My shot isn't doing much better, mind you, even if it wasn't a classic water reflection shot. It's almost as is DPC members have completely went 50/50 in voting in this challenge. I'm standing at 3.96, but I'm still hoping to make it into the first 100s, seeing how low the votes have been so far.

It's going to be a long week... =)

This is a very cool and creative shot and just as you state, it did not use transparency. So, I was not around when it was voted on but if I had been, it probably would have gotten a 3 as it has definite WOW factor, IMO, but it failed to meet the requirements of the challenge which is every bit as important, to me, as not violating editing rules. Since DNMC is not a DQ offense, a low score is the only thing available to keep people from treating every challenge like a Free Study.

Very cool shot though.
