I suggest that there may be 2 different categories so Amateur and Pro. I understand that this only for the fun of it but it may be more even and more fun I think. I'm probably not the first one to suggest this.

How would you decide who was in which category ?

Exactly. Would a someone who considers himself an amateur/pro be bashed if he entered the wrong challenge? Haha...good for debating people now :)

Only volunteering (is it the good word?? --- I speak french). I play beach volleyball tournaments and you suscribe for the level you have to play. "Shark" players (in volleyball I mean) don't have fun. Though this site is not really about competition, my suggestion may not be applicable here, I don't know, I'm kind of new here.

I think most of us here a amatues (95%, maybe). Very few make there livings at photography here.

But I think a contest for people people that have a rating under a certain score overall. Or maybe a contest for people with less then xx entries would be okay. Probably impossible to do, but it would be fine with me. I would be all over it :)

I think this is a great idea - have two challenges one week, one for people with average overall of less than 5, or 6, and one for people with average of more. I dont think the Site would need to impose these rules on the submission page, but they could easily be policed using DQ's.

"Suggesting" is probably a better word though "volunteering an opinion" is certainly correct as well. Your English is fantastic :)

There's a saying that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and while it is horrible English I think it's good advice. The way things are now works better than any other photo contest site I've found. I'd vote that we not try to fix it :)

Don't think it would work, amatures would soon be promoted to pro challenges and visa versa thus messing up the whole idea.

I think prizes is a good suggestion though ;) ;) ;) perhaps $3,000 worth of camera equiptment for everyone comming in the top 20.

But is is a little bit "broke" in that there are more and more participants every week. Smaller challenges are more rewarding for the voters as they can vote on the whole lot and see where their favorites place. Smaller challenges get more comments. So any suggestions on how to break up the group are welcome.

Personally I don't think this is a good ideea ...
The pro's don't have to worry about the amatours too much .. I think ... but the amatours should have high standards so their work to be good. For example ... I prefer to be situated on the 50th place in the final top (amatours and pro's), than to be placed in the 5th place in the amatours separate competition ... The higher the standards are, the better the photos should be ...

Nope, no entry categories Pro vs Am. Even though I am quite amatuer, I really don't care about the competitve angle all that much. I'd just as soon toss my images in with everyone else and enjoy.
Heh, heh ...cash prizes, eh? I don't think so. Why ruin a good thing by making it commercial. Besides, I doubt that the website owners would want to do that anyway.. way too much hassle... we'd have to see ads and pop-ups, and entry fees and all of that.("someone has to pay the prizes")
I agree with other posters.. just leave it be. This is purely a fun experience and a terrific learning tool. Very little of that left on the web as it is these days.

Well said... I appreciate not having the ads and popups all over the site. I'm not in this for the prizes. By throwing in with the rest of em, it encourages me to do better. I'm also learning a lot. My vote is to stay the same. :-)

That would place me in a bind...I wouldn't know where to post as I am a professional artist but and "amateur" photographer. I have had extensive training in the arts and have had a 17 career. For the past 10 I've worked in exhibits for a museum creating the displays. I produce a lot of short films and graphics now. So, being that I seldom use photography in my career but am a professional artist that loves photography as a new hobby....on which side of the fence would I post on?

I think that 'amateur' are those who see themselves as 'still learning' and professionals are those who think that they know it all... which means that it's far better to think urself as amateur as u r improving everyday rather than stagnating like professionals

By that token a photo journalist who still considers him/herself as learning would be an amateur.

I see a professional as making a living out of photography, rather than a minor supplementary income or hobby.

You seem to be making fairly large accusations about pros thinking they know it all and "stagnating". I'm a professional software developer, and would be fairly insulted if someone suggested being a pro was worse than being an amateur.

I love this site just the way it is. However, I would love to see a one time challenge for all the ribbon winners todate. Maybe make it annual challenge.

Any amateurs wishing to aspire to professional status may want to consider my professional photography brief here:

There's some money in it if the shot is right...
