Been fussing with this shot forever. Is it overcooked?

Thanx, R.

Pretty harsh Robert.
Using gas or electric?

Thanx, R.

I'd say it is somewhat. It could look awesome as a soft focus image :) Try running it through the NeatImage.

The problem is, less saturation = less sense of luminosity. And the leaves WERE very, very red anyway. Red's tough, it blocks up so easily :-(

As for soft focus, I tried it and it didn't seem to work for this one. NI especially was a disaster, it removed all detail from the red leaves and then it looked REALLY blocked up and oversaturated. In my experience, you can usually get away with a lot of saturation as long as it doesn't force the color/details to go completely flat.

Sigh... I'm not able to make this one make me happy :-(

Actually the soft focus really does help in my opinion.
I made a little tweak to the WB, then did a soft focus in a new layer, erasing back some of the green
leaves in the foreground and the tree trunks, and manual blur in the blue (compression artifacts)

the saturation is wonderful, but may I just say that I personally felt it is over-sharpened by a bit...

I like the shot Bear, but i agree with some of the comments of this being over sharpened or over contrast.

I love the colors in the leaves, but it needs something... I'm not sure what... Midtones?

I would play with it a bit if you would post an un-adjusted shot.

I think an image is overcooked if you have to wear sunglasses to view. :P

Seriously though, Goodman's shot is more easy on the eyes because it doesn't come at you all at once like Bear's shot, IMO. Simply put there's too much color explosion in the foreground.

Destroyed a lot of detail... but the idea was to tone some of the reds down.
Using lightroom.......
Kept the color temp @ 5000 same as file.
acr: linear
highlights: +30
Color Adjust:
Red Hue: +10 (more to orange)
Magenta Saturation: -100
Red Luminance: -30
Split Tone:
Red Shadow: to 5

saved to cs2......
Bright/Contrast: -1/+4 fade to 50%
Highlight reduction at 40% w/DOP Tonality Mask
back to 8 bit: Digital Gem: min. noise reduce & max soften.
and fade to 30%.
