**throws rope down to Yanko** come on up.....I am not used to the view from up here! I usually look up at the bottom of a snake's belly!

Good luck to everyone.... Maybe my voting tonight (I am just starting) will help boost some others up!

Wasn't sure how the DPC team would accept the photo, but I'm pretty much relieved :) Not in the running for a ribbon or anything. And thanks for those folks who've left comments. I'm trying to leave some myself. Now for the expected rant LOL: down 0.3 since yesterday late afternoon!

Ya and I am heading in the other direction. I seem to be going up at night and down during the day...so I hope the trend continues!

Good luck to you. :)

much lower than I was hoping, but still above my average, so I guess I won't complain too much.

Does anyone else find that their Free Study scores come out a lot lower than expected? I am really beginning to figure out that scoring really depend upon the challenge you are in. I have a phot that I know would score 6+ in other "themed" challenges, but it just hanging so-so in this Free Study.

I think that to be true. Many photos in the Free Study that if where to be entered in a themed challenge would score lots better.

That is only to be expected don't you think? To take a photo for a specific challenge during one week is much more difficult to do than to simply enter the best of your work for an entire month, on any subject.

For themed challenges I take into account the imagination and creativity of actually deciding on what to shoot, let alone how well the shot is done. In free study all the photos should be technically perfect as a starting point, then it has to have a good overall "feel" and some staying power.

Simple reason: in a themed challenge your entry is compared to a limited number of competitors for a specific topic. The photo doesn't have to be perfect- it only has to be better than the others. In a Free Study, the benchmark is every photo we've ever seen, and you are competing against any lucky shot, exotic location or pretty model your fellow DPCers could find over an entire month. That's a much tougher act to follow.

I agree Shannon. This part really says it "In a Free Study, the benchmark is every photo we've ever seen"
Yep, that pretty much says it well.

hmm, I think that's a fairly rigid way to look at it. I mean, if I am to compare the shots in this Free Study to the hundreds and perhaps thousands of timeless, classic, and flat out brilliant photographs I've seen over the course of my life, nothing in this group would score over a 4.

I prefer to judge using the context of the site. I compare and judge these shots only to the rest of the field, not to every photography I've ever seen anywhere at any time.

I didn't say anywhere. We're comparing to all the photos we've seen on DPC. For example, a good dragonfly shot might work well for a themed challenge, but in a Free Study it may not stack up to some of the great dragonfly shots posted before.

That's pretty harsh. I believe there are some excellent photos in this challenge that could stand the test of time. Generally though, I do vote a bit lower than normal.

I don't think what I said is harsh at all, and I didn't for a momemt imply that there aren't excellent shots in this Free Study or elsewhere on DPC.

I am hoping that after you get more than 100 votes, your score does not change very much? please please please? Is this generally the case in a very large challenge like this one?
