i'm curious to see how many people have actually conveyed the subject, study or results of science. i can already see people getting all fired up in the forums about their interpretation of this idea. Lets remember folks that this challenge is not called "nature"

Hmmmm!
H2O is not nature?
What do you drink?I I like Canadian club! LOL

Actualy weather study is also a science(wind, clouds, hurricanes)and also nature!
Human and animal diseases are part of the science and also part of the nature! I only like when photo gives me the idea about the scientific project or subject but not the name of the photo!

Photosynthesis
oxidation
evaporation/condensation

I don't see how you can separate nature 100% from science...?

10/13/2003 11:05:49 PM · #5
no no no, i didnt say separate it, i guess i'm tired of those who toss in last minute entries that are loosely tied to the challenge. i fully see the connection between the two and expect some great pics this round. i also like orange juice.

But you are 100% right here,I allready see stretches of nature shots being described as scientific projects!
10/14/2003 01:08:23 AM · #8
What isn't science? A ball? No, but when you throw it, it is. "Nature" isn't science. But the study of animals is. The study of landforms is. Geology sure is a science.

I hate threads that do nothing except put one group of entries as separate and above the rest.

"this challenge is not called nature." No, and it's not called nuclear fission or biochemical engineering either.

My daughter has been wanting to enter a contest since I started here and I told her the next open challenge, if she could come up with a good idea I would hand over the camera and let her have it. Well, she saw the Science and started talking about all these ideas of what she is learning in school and I told her, "That's great but how are you going to put that in a picture? You can only post one shot, with one title, no other explaination until after the challenge is over."

She went to her room, thought about it, came back about 1/2 hour later and said, "Mom, I got it, come see." I grabbed the camera, walked into her room and had to agree, she got it, so I handed the camera over, let her shoot away, showing her how to adjust the settings so she could try different lighting, opening the curtain, closing the curtain and then off to the computer. We went through the 25 shots she took, picked the best one and I showed her how to crop and play with the brightness and contrast and let her have it. We then set up her account and loaded her shot up. I was going to also enter the Science challenge but decided to let her do this one herself. I warned her that people might be harsh, might not really understand but she's willing to take that chance for the opportunity to learn and be a part of something that she really is starting to enjoy.

So what is Science, after this HUGE long post? Science is what you make of it. Having worked in a Science Center for over a year and being in charge of the Pre-School Program it can be anything from color to food to space to rocket science, science surrounds us and this is a challenge that will really be open to interpetation.

I can't wait to see some of the shots for this one.

I had this photo in science challenge and this thread changed my mind and I removed it!

How would you rate this photo as UV study!

Isn't everything science?
10/14/2003 01:08:15 PM · #13
Science to me is an approach.
An aesthetic picture of an plant/ animal is not scientific.
A shot that communicates a scientific approach to how that animal/ plant works would fit the challenge.
Science is dispassionate, and forms hypotheses about how something works.
Science does not refer to the subject, but to the study of the subject.
Science tries to prove things, even though the only thing that can ever be proven is that the thinker exists.
So, yes anything that exists can be studied in a scientific way...
this does not mean that everything is science.

High. I'd consider it for the Light challenge...

It's a 1st class shot Kosta and you did well not to submit it to Science because off topic. Maybe it would have even rated very well, but it would have been a pity to make it lose ground because of the topic constrain.

The best pictures are those who have a life-scope longer than a challenge and we had a recent magnificent example with the great photo of Konador.

Having said that, I hope to win the blue ribbon this time. =)

correct. but, as has been mentioned, science and nature are a little hard to seperate.

what about botany? that's a science. biology - that's connected with nature quite a bit :)

so yeah, it's not nature, but nature comes into it. a botanical shot doesn't have to be a nature shot.

Photography itself is a science...looks like this challenge may have more interpretation than the "Urban Landscapes" and "Irony" challenges combined!
10/14/2003 03:53:10 PM · #20
Ahem - at the risk of being slammed, trounced etc., I will just say that I hope we will all vote in such a way as to reward those who BEST convey science with their photograph, whether nature be involved or not.

But I agree, the incidence of "loosely met the challenge" is likely to be high.
10/14/2003 04:03:50 PM · #21
stevenayer, agreeing with you. I will be voting for the ones I feel convey science best, in what ever form it presents itself, chemisty, boilogy, physics...whatever :)

Remember that the challenge says the subject, study OR result of science. The subjects of science could even be a mouse or a plant or an animal etc. Any technological advancements made came about as the result of science. These could be anything including the foam pillows that came about as a part of the science involved in the space studies. PC came about because scientists made advancements to allow smaller components to do the same work as larger ones. Have you ever seen the first computers that took up rooms instead of desktops? Plastic containers are the result of science. I think we need to remember the OR in this challenge. From what I am reading people are trying to put and AND in there instead of the word or.

I don't know..

I have learned just here (on DPC) and at my expenses that the topic is very relevant.

However, there have been lots of discussion about (and if) one direction or the other were too narrow minded...

Because it can be pretty narrow minded also to have a wide degree of interpretation on the scope of a challenge..

I can easily imagine:

"My Cat - a Science subject"

"My Cat's Nightmare (or Dream)"

"Great lights on my Cat's fur"

"My Cat: Exposed"

and last, but not least:

"Recipes? How my neighboor cooked My Cat"

I mean... no offense for cat lovers, I love them too, but if there are two good pics and one lets people think about Science at first sight while the other one needs a long explanation to introduce it.. well.. it would be just a mess (in Challenge terms) if the second one would rate better.

Or combination of a "My sleepy cooked and exposed pussycat under the scientific UV light"!

When I saw the offered photos I should kept this one in science as well!
