I've had an epiphany of sorts today, and it's Jonpink's's fault!!! You see he commented on my photo in the exposed challenge.

And I quote:
Good Points:see your idea and like it.
Bad Points:overall it makes for a dull photograph. no interesting focal points of detail or color. Score:3
End quote.

At first all I saw was the '3' and I thought to my self "that arrogant ____________ __________" (insert favorite negative adjective and noun having to do with an unpopular body part). Then I actually read (not just looked at) his comment. I saw that it was true! I stepped back and looked at it again and my picture was dull. Moral of story...It's not just the challenge criteria. If it's not a good picture it's not a good picture.

Something for all of us to think about before hitting submit or fueling more raves about bad comments...

Ultimately this is what the Challenges are all about!

We take and prepare a picture which we find appropriate and pleasing at the point we submit it.

Then good or bad we get voted on and hopefully commented upon (note to self - must make greater effort to comment on all that I vote on) then it is up to us to absorb the comments and reflect as to how accurate they are. Note - on my second Challenge entry I had 2 comments that were exactly opposite "views", which shows that you can not please all the people all the time.

Are we not here to share, learn, help and educate ourselves to become better overall photographers BUT (not shouting just wanted a bit of emphasis) negative comments do not make the commentator or the commented bad people/photographers.

Just my 2p's worth

PS I wish I knew what formula the voting uses (if I could understand it?) the figures are to 4 decimal places and I cannot quite see how a single vote has such relatively small yet potential significant effect.

i agree with toocool, just meeting the challenge never produces high scores. most of the pics that win on here are good pictures outside of the challenge, and don't need the aspect of meeting the challenge to boost the score.

too many people get caught up in feeling like they should have done better because they met the challenge.

taking a good picture makes a good picture. meeting the challenge doesn't automatically make for a good picture, its a requirement.

Hi jonathon

Just a thought to reflect on your, erm!, comment about jonpink.

The standard of ones photography does not mean you can not comment critically on others images.

Afterall, if the only ones commenting on famous artists (note art not photography) were other artists then I dread to think what a bitchy slanging match that would degenerate into. In this example it is possible to respect "critics" views who are not themselves artisans.

As I say just a thought :~)

I'm with jonpink on this one.

A few months back, I got a similar comment from Willem. That comment really kicked me up the preverbial and into trying for more interesting images.

And... we don't need to be great ourselves to recognise dull entries.

I wish I was in his glass house so I could learn more from him. He just commented on my Exposed shot and it was blunt and to the point. My comments tend to go on and on sometimes, different styles. But my point is that his comments were true to him and made me look at my shot from another angle. I don't expect any of my entries to ribbon for quite some time, I have tons to learn but if I can take a shot that will get someone of jonpink's talent to comment than I like to think that they must see something worth cultivating and take the time to help me along.

That's just rude and condensending. Why be like that? Do you act like that around your kids? You have such sweet looking children so I'm guessing not.

It has nothing to do with brown nosing, it has to do with respecting another's work and ideas. I looked at your profile and like some of your shots and would also be honored if you ever commented on my shots in the challenges or just in my portfolio. But than again, if you don't, no skin off my nose either way. When someone takes the time to comment on the shots, good comments or bad I appreciate it and I look at their profile and shots to see what I might someday aspire to.

Talk about being arrogant.

I would hope not having just gone back through your comments to others, I see now that is just how you are. Ah well, such is life, I still like some of your work and you have beautiful children. Good luck to you.

If you don't want your children involved, don't post their pictures ;)

lol.

JonPink, if you read this thread (which you prob. will since I see you posting in the forums now), I'm sure you're laughing too.

Your stuff is so much better than this rude bruno guy's stuff that it's killing me.
