I just got my new lens (Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D), actually it is home on the doorstep.....It is my first purchase of a lens since getting these two lenses (Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6
Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6G) When I purchased my film camera 6yrs ago.

So, at risk of getting ridiculed, what is the most common time everyone uses this lense? I understand it is just going to be much more sharp then using the zoom lense. I guess what I am asking should this become my lens of choice in most situations?

I heard that they work well for concerts.

Its a great portrait and low light lens. You can use it for just about anything.

I have 2 cameras and one of them ALWAYS has a 50mm on it. I use my 50 in-studio for portrait work; out & about for street stuff and beach stuff, weddings, and well.... I use it more than any other single lens in the bag.

If I made the link correctly follow it for some great shots taken with this lens.Librodo has some beautiful portraits using it.

By the way... If it on your doorstep right now, where do you live? :-)

Try shooting close-up at various objects with it wide open at 1.8. It's fun to experiment with an amazingly narrow DOF!

Yup, for photos by camera or lens just look under Equipment on the menu in the upper left. I haven't made any glass purchases yet but when I do I'll use this source to check them out.

Have fun with the new lens!

Everything. The sky's your limit. Nope not even that, you can even shoot the clouds if that tickles your fancy!

Gather up a pretty girl and a squid?

OK -
Congrats on the new lens -- I love that feeling!
Serious question. Why do awesome photographers like Librodo have the 1.8 instead of the 1.4?
I have the 1.4 and I'm sure it's the same (other than the .4) ...
Anyway - the first thing you need to do is get a reversal ring and shoot at things with the lens 5.2 inches away with a razor-thin DOF!! LOL!!!

Here's more ideas:

50mm 1.4

I have one (50 f/1.4) but is a kind of inbetween lens. Don't really know what to do with it.
For street scenes / walkaround and full body stuff I prefer my 30 f/1.4 and for portraits I am thinking about getting an 85 f/1.8

Make use of the low light capabilities and shoot in low light conditions without flash.

I must admit that the 85mm 1.8 is next on my list. Awsome lens and very sharp.

No it is not. The 1.8 is more based on plastick and looks more modern, while the f/1.4 looks like an older design with more metal. In real life it sure looks more bombproof.
They also have different ranges of good performance. The f/1.4 is better wide-open till f/4 and after f/4 the 1.8 is better. Slight differences in bokeh too (runs and hides).

Yeah I saw her face and if you meant pretty as a euphemism then OK. If not you used the wrong adjective.

Thanks for the info. I really like heavy metal I guess ...
the 10-20 sigma is the runner up as my fave and that thing is pretty mass-ive.

unless I got it wrong euphemism is 'the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt'....so I thought you were inferring that the word pretty was used instead of and offensive adjective...

but then again you didn't mean me....I just assumed because I started the thread...

NO I did not mean you! I mean the girl in the image routerguy666 was referring to. Please accept my apologies for the misunderstanding.
