If you have Excel, look in this thread for a workbook that sorts it out for you.

Thank you! To the very kind person that just gave me a 10 :-)

I might FINALLY get a new "top three" to look at. I'm terribly tired of looking at photos nearly a year old.

If you don't want to mess with excel; there is an easy, simple arithmetic method you can use to figure out the number of a vote received. You can only figure out the exact vote you received this way if only one vote has been given since the last time you wrote your score down.

For example (this is from a previous challenge):

At 221 votes the score is 5.6154

221 x 5.6154 = 1241

At 222 votes the score is 5.6126

222 x 5.6126 = 1246

The number of the vote given is the difference of the two:

1246 - 1241 = 5

So, A score of 5 was given.

Lots of times, you have to round the number up a bit when you multiply the vote x score number. The auctual number you get when you multiply 222x5.6126 is 1245.9972 - you round it up to 1246.

If more than one vote has passed since you wrote down your score you have to divide the difference by the number of votes to get an average of the votes given.

For example:

at 255 votes the score is 5.6392

255 x 5.6392 = 1438

at 257 votes the score is 5.6381

257 x 5.6381 = 1449

Subtract the totals:

1449 - 1438 = 11

Two votes were given that equal 11 - so, most likely with the score this picture has been getting the votes are a 5 & 6.

If two votes added up to 11 on a picture that was scoring in the high 6's or 7's you would porbably figure it was an 8 and a 3 or even a 9 and 2.

This sounds long and complicated but it's really super simple when you get in the habit of doing it. Usually, I write my scores down each time I check them and then if you see a sudden drop or rise you can multiply things out and figure out what vote you received.

hovering at a 4.2 but I deserve it!! I am seeing a few DNMTC...but I went for a shot that vaguely rides on the back of the "out of focus foreground" definition...noting that the out of foucs part does not HAVE TO be a result of lense work or DOF...really pushing the boundaries, but had a lot of fun doing it!! Ha Ha... this week trying for the portrait in landscape and making every effort to be disciplined, I'm struggling to capture a good portrait..oh well...

whoops...sorry I saw that the page was open and sent in my message, but my mate was actually logged in on his name...silly confusion there...so read the previous comment as "faery's" message!!! Sorry .. my manly lover is doing a whole lot better than me on the Bokeh challenge: hovering at a 6.2..oh so proud of him!!

Thanks for the 10 whoever that was! :)

So with the mathmatical explanation below this could have been a 9 and a 3 or it might even have been a 10 and someone bumping it up 2 points from an 8 they had voted before.... you never know right?

Yes, you do know for sure if only one vote has been given when you figure things out. If two or more votes have been given then the number that results is the combination of the two or more votes.

Since only one vote was given between the figuring process in the above example she does know for sure that a 10 and a 2 were the votes given.

Yup, what she said :) I'm using L2's spreadsheet though. An addiction to accompany your addiction to update, lovely....

Is it just me or has it been a rough day? I had 240 votes and a 6.17 and now with 244 I have a 6.09. That is pretty rough 4 votes. 3 1's and a 2? Hmmm. I think there is some crazy voting things going on today in light of all the events.

Is it low scores being case, or have other voters adjusted their votes? I have seen my score move around today without any additional votes being cast. And I know that I have recast a few votes on several (some up and some down) as I look at the pictures one last time.

A diffrence of 4 total votes, in about 1 hour, and a .9 swing with 244 cast. It would have had to be like 10 people making low changes all at once. I suppose it could happen. I have a feeling I recieved alot of 1's on this image. I am not complaining, just taking notice.

second time today I have made that mistake. Almost a .1 swing. There. Just a strange turn on an image that was doing ok. No big deal really.

Yup, experiencing the same here, almost a .15 swing downwards today, dropped me out of the 7s into the high 6s, I am getting 1roughly 1 vote every hour and am finding my score dropping a significant amount each time...

damn trolls.

Mine's nudged up a little. I think the trolls hit me early and often. One comment asked, "Am I looking at a ribbon here??"

I don't think so! ;-)
10/30/2006 04:38:18 PM · #297
Mine has taken a drop, too. Last night I had a one-two punch that really was hard. First I got a two and the very next vote was a 1 - really caused a big drop.

It's not like it's a top image - just getting in the high 5's. Usually you don't get the "hate votes" of 1 & 2 unless you have an image that is really good and people want to hurt what they think might get a ribbon.

That would explain what has happened to me then :)

Notice that since about vote 165 fewer have commented on my entry and my vote tally has slowed and lagged behind others. Not sure what that means.

That being said I have this appeal...
a vote of 10 for me is a vote for the average photographer and a strike against those ivory tower, hot-shot, know everything, elitist photographers! To quote the democratic party, "Its time for a change!"
