I can't believe the stupidity of some of the people on this site, as shown by the comments they make. for example

5/6/2002 (9:48:20 AM) - Can't these guys smile or look a little happy?

5/6/2002 (8:23:09 AM) - A pinch gross. Nasty, dude.

5/6/2002 (7:47:48 AM) - can't put "god bless america" in the title of anything and expect a 10.

i say this knowing i will get flamed because i am revealing my photo, but c'mon, these are just some rediculously stupid comments. i could give good reasons why all of those are pointless and unneeded comments but i will save myself the trouble. i like my picture and that's all that matters. people need to just take a picture and rate it, and not leave comments like these.

I liked your picture. They remind me of some of the guys I know and work with. Seriously, I know where you are coming from. I had a comment saying that the rule of thirds doesn't apply to this type of ad. Do they know what I had in mind? I set my shot up with room for text as in a real advertisement. Also, good print ads should lead the eyes to where you want them to go. I believe an off to the side shot works well for this purpose.

i can usually find something constructive in the most inane comment

'course it's usually based upon my perception

so far, there's only one comment i can't do that with

...and it turns out to be my favorite!

5/6/2002 (2:11:57 AM) - Are you shitting me?

Don't pay it any attention.

I took the picture of the old-style stairs from the last challenge. I actually learned quite a bit from the comments, such as having the foreground and background out of focus while the middle is in focus doesn't work so well as an in-focus to out-of-focus gradual shift, front-to-back. I also learned to make sure my pictures are perfectly parallel :)

On the flipside, I received a few comments that discussed the stairs themselves. Being as that the challenge was not "find a pair of stairs that are the epitome of modern elegance", I feel that my stairs, which make me happy, were just fine.

So shrug off the pointless WTF comments, and extract from the others whatever you can, even if it's too critical, and learn learn learn! Right?

:)

yep. ignore the insane comments unless they're asking if you're insane. Then pause to think about it and say, "yes". But only because people that are insane usually don't think they are. So, "yes" keeps you sain.

yeah i agree with you guys, and another thing is i know that my picture is not a winner, the lighting is bad, but i thought the composition was pretty good

It was so hard not to RANT, RANT, RANT, during last weeks voting after getting comments like:

This is a very well executed photo, but makes me uneasy because of the manipulative, propagandistic subject matter. To me it says "you're either with us, or you're with the terrorists"... ie. it embodies divisiveness and a stance against peace. Maybe it is more pleasing to Americans than to the rest of us.

I hate America.

These comments really have nothing to do with how I could have made this photo better. It sucks that if you want to place a photo of the American flag on this site you have to endure the 1 & 2 votes from people who are voting on their ideas of America and not on the photo.

Now I don't drink, chew or smoke. But I am not going to give all of the photos with those products in them a 1 now.

Come on people, think merit, think quality, and vote accordingly.

Whew, that felt good, it's not good to hold things in so long. Now I am going to go hang upside down for a bit and get a head rush!

you put your picture on the site for it to be voted on. if you dont like votes less than 9, find a site for children. they like to shelter them, so their scale will probably only travel from about 10 to 10. plus, once again, lots of people are just assholes.

digiteyes, i was going to comment in your picture area but i had to go somewhere. if you like taking pictures of flags, wait until its raining. i had to walk to a gas station a few months ago, it was raining, and theyve always had a huge flag behind the station. it was windy, so the rain was hitting the flag while it was whipping around and flinging shit all over the place. it was pretty cool looking, plus it looked like silk from being wet.

achiral...

I did a little retouch on your photo to see what might help.

1)..get the guy on the left to put his middle finger down..it casts a shadow on his face plus he looks like he is telling your potential customers to fug off :-)

2) When putting backdrops in photos put the backdrop WAAAAAYYYY in the back. That keeps shadows from your subject from falling on the backdrop, puts your backdrop in a soft off-focus and keeps the whole "jailhouse photo" effect from happening. Speaking of shadows..you probably know this but flash photograpy kills photos in general. continuous lighting and natural light always helps to focus and get depth of field.

3) Get a perspective on straight on shots. Meaning think foreground ...middle ..and background and then put each in its own area of focus to add depth.

A sharp focus on the product with their arms trailing back to their bodies...going more out of focus ( think depth of field here) and the flag with just the basic out of focus shape would have pushed the product forward and really helped.

Overall a lot of potential. I'm not perfect by any stretch...I'm just old and have been told this too many times to count. :-)

here's my two cents. . .the flag is hanging wrong. that's why I gave it a low score. Stars always go in upper left. :(

The flag is two sided and the wind was blowing. It wasn't hanging wrong it is just that from the perspective of the photo it is not what you normally see.

My point is what the hell does "GOD BLESS AMERICA" have to do with chewing tobacco? It's freaking rediculous that I should have to defend my comments like this so I don't get banned for having an opinion.

My friend achiral;
We all have opinions.
The three examples you gave....Do you know what their vote was?
No.
Take five and think about this. These are people you don't know, they don't know you. This is not personal. It's a photo.
Let this roll off your back.
You will never please us all and you'll go mad trying!
:)

Well, be that as it may, it's distracting.

Don't get all bent on a thread YOU start in order to berate others on honest comments..then get snide when folks take time out their day to download your photo and see if there is anything they might do that is HONEST to help rather than blow you off as a kid.

"'Here's the challenge: sell a product! Your job is to photograph a product and have it appeal to your audience: the users of DPChallenge."

I didn't major in marketing so I'm not worried about what a real ad company would do. I'm just trying to convince you guys to buy the product. :)

The whole point of my post is that i'm bent about comments...i can berate others however i want, i just wish i knew who it was berating my photo for no reason. and why is it that when someone gets mad they are seen as a child? that is weird logic
05/06/2002 01:46:47 PM · #22
i use an index card to bounce my on-camera flash at an angle so the foreground isnt blown and the shadows arent all straight back, which is that characteristic flat flashed look.

i also would get a couple of strong lamps and sidelight the guys and the also light the flag. then i'd say 'stand real still' and i'd shoot it all at a slowish shutter speed.

You are correct..you can berate others as you want. You can do whatever you want. And other's can do likewise...ain't America great!

Getting mad or frustrated in itself is not childish..I get mad as much as anybody else.

Getting mad over a comments made on a photo that gets critiqued on a site for photos to get critiqued on and then ripping on folks who are here to offer any small help they can is childish...no matter how old you are cronologically.

I really enjoyed the last challenge and the diversity of the entries. But. it makes me very disheartened that some choose to go beyond the concept of the forum to make pointed, derogatory, and hurtful remarks about content.

"....And Justice for All", which placed 14th, received nine 1's, and eleven 2's, along with some hurtful remarks, that had nothing to do with the picture's quality! 1's and 2's ?!?!? Come on, now. Look at that picture!

Some of the remarks were almost hateful ie:
lisae - 4/29/2002
This is a very well executed photo, but makes me uneasy because of the manipulative, propagandistic subject
matter. To me it says "you're either with us, or you're with the terrorists"... ie. it embodies divisiveness and a
stance against peace. Maybe it is more pleasing to Americans than to the rest of us.

Daniel - 4/29/2002
I hate America.

Others were able to at least rate the merits of the photo, in spite of any feelings they may have had as to the subject.

cbonsall - 4/30/2002
Verging on cheesy patriotism but its a really nice pic so I'll let you off!!

And still others were kind enough to see the picture was built on the topic of the Challenge,"From the Ground Up"; for America (as the flag represents in the picture, I presume) has once again rebuilt , and resumed it's motion and activities, "from the ground up" after a devastating blow!

Speigner - 4/29/2002
Excellent composition and timing. A shot like this is hard to get, and you did a great job. Be prepared though,
people are going to slam this because of the subject matter, apparently many people confuse taking a
photograph with making a politcal statement. I'm giving high marks for it's quality.

This forum and it's challenges should be a-political, and the pictures submitted for scrutiny should be judged on their technical merit and set-up skills and be taken ,as they are presented, as an example of the photographer's interpretation of the theme, not a subversive or subliminal motive!

If subversive or subliminal messages were intended or effective, then I'd already be headed out to buy that bottle of Absolut and can of Skoal as per the current challenge!

Lighten up, people!

I could not agree with you more. Let's keep our eyes on the ball here. It's about learning to take better picturers, period.
