My Olympus C-720 UZ will no longer power up with batteries. :( I've switched batteries, tried them in another camera and they work fine, but not in this camera. I can still plug in the adapter and it will come on, but who wants to use a plugged in camera all the time. Drats!

My question.....I've never had to have a digital repaired. Is it very expensive??

I asss-u-me it's out of warranty... just how handy are you?
If it powers up with the AC adapter, the first place i would look is the electrical contacts in the battery bay. First try cleaning the contacts with an eraser. If this has no effect (I suspect it might not) then look for the electrical attachments from the battery contacts to the camera. The connection may be made with wires, or the battery clips may be soldered directly into a circuit board. The latter case can be prone to solder joint failure if not designed properly.
If you're handy, you could re-solder this yourself, or perhaps you have a friend who would undertake the minor surgery.
It might be necessary to remove a cover to get at the connections, in which case there's more risk.

Not handy at all :(

It looks like the battery clips may be soldered directly to the board. I can't see wires. Thanks for your reply anyway.

I guess I'll be doing inside shots until I can either get it fixed or get a new one. Just think.......at one time I didn't have a digital camera and never gave it a thought. Now I can't imagine what I'll do without one.

I like your indoor shots.

well, thank you Harvey. :) :)

I just found my warrenty this morning, and I'm 3 months over the one year. So..............I guess I'll be doing lots of inside shots.

Guess I wouldn't get another Olympus. I gave my old one away because the flash quit working. It was just over the warrenty period too. Now this.

I'd strongly suggest contacting Olympus anyway and explaining gently but firmly your disappointment, including your previous experience. It's of course their call as to whether to do something outside the warranty, but given some gentle coaxing, they may respond. It's the right thing to do to keep a customer. And you have nothing to lose to try.

that approach has worked for me in the past ( not with olympus but other companies) - if you can convince them
that you and all your pals wont be buying any more olympus products
because your disappointed with the quality of their products.

be sure to move as far up the olympus ladder as you can.
