So, what kind of user leaves a comment "Dull" as a comment and hides his identity? How the hell is that helpful in any way other than just pissing me off?
Don't give me the "Everyone has an opinion" crap on this. This type of comment is totatlly useless to anyone other than the userleaving it.

Yes, I'm pissed.

Sometimes people feel they must leave a comment when they really have no idea what to say...that kind of comment shows their intelligence...when I say that kind of comment talking about the "Dull" one...I for one might not know everything about photography but I feel I can give a comment and not leave the person feeling they wish I just hadn't said anything at all...there are far too many people like that...but then again I have learned to just ignore them. That’s the best thing to do…just ignore them…I think they are looking to make you mad and make a reply…don’t flatter them.

Does the discription fit the image? Sometimes, one word does say it all.
Or maybe he or she knew it would set you off like it did.

Look, don't be so sensitive about it. If your pic was hanging in a gallery, chances are someone would look at it and say exactly the same thing, or something similar. If you heard them say it, would you get all defensive and up in their face about it?

All art doesn't connect with all people.

Maybe for them, "Dull" sums it up perfectly.

Couldn't you have posted the same rant about this comment on your Sillhouettes III entry: nice! ?

Oh, I guess if it is a single positive word, it's acceptable, but if it's negative, it is... hold on, let me see... "Stupid" and "Useless"

I think you should suck it up and face the reality that one person thought it was dull enough for him to take the time to mention it. I would consider that helpful if it was left on one of my entries. Stop taking things personally, you'll live longer.

And as a side note, I really, really thought this thread was targeted directly at me when I saw the topic in the list. :)

Relax.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm .... let me see...Dull(referring to an object)... Dipwad...(as in describing a person)

Yep, I think I know which one I find most offensive... care to hazard a guess as to which one.

Considering the many interpretations of the word "Dull" there might just be some value to the comment. Perhaps the author meant that the image was listless, or lacking in intensity or sharpness, or a myriad of other nuances.

The comments is indeed terse, but it could possibly have some merit...Too bad the author didn't expand.

I'm sure that every person who enters photos is at some point frustrated with the comments, or lack of them, that have been received. But in all seriousness, you and other entrants should be at least a little mindful of the type of reactions you post in the forums about the comments. You might find them unhelpful, but a rant against them could result in a reaction you probably don't want - no comments at all. I pretty much don't comment (or vote) anymore at all after having read a little too many forum posts (my favorite was the one that suggested that he would dismiss any comment made by someone as crap if their photos didn't live up to his standard).

To add to this point, when you rant against comments in the forum, you not only risk intimidating folks from commenting on your images, they are also intimidated from commenting on everyone else's images as well.

I am an ardent opposer of comment bashing.

Word!

I try to avoid one word comments. That said, a "dull" comment is actually a lot more useful than you seem to be thinking that it is. It's telling you that that person saw nothing in your photo to draw him or her in to it, and so probably skipped over it giving it an average mark up.

I'd venture to say that a whole load of people skip past "dull" photos without saying anything about them - at the end of the challenge you'd have an average score and no clue as to why. At least this comment could give you a starting point for analysis.

The person commenting on your image clearly thought it was dull, accept it and get on with your photography.

Y'know, after reading all the replys and giving it some thought to my rant I've got to say that yeah, I probably did go overboard. While I still don't see how "dull" is of any help at a site that is partly supposed to be about learning perhaps venting in this form was innapropriate.

And Art, I KNOW that my Silhouettes III sucked pooch. Anything else to say?

LOL! I didn't say anything about the image - just making an observation about a one word comment you received on it. But now I am wondering what would happen if I did leave a comment on it that said "This sucks pooch!" (even though I'm not sure what that means--- dull?) Heehee.

Seriously, Steve, take any comments with a grain of salt and at least a slight bit of gratitude that someone took the time. I've felt the anger well up when I received some comments I didn't like, but I have to remind myself that I am not going to please everyone and if only those people who loved my image commented (which is what typically happens because of the fear of backlash), I would be getting a seriously one-sided and inaccurate assessment of the job I did on the image.

Nuff preaching. I think you have owned up to the mistake of posting this and I think that's honorable. Your village is safe. ;-)

Have fun, dammit! :)

Yes you did over-react a little and now you have had time to reflect. I think you have discovered just how powerful and strangely helpfull the word 'DULL' is. The commenter has distilled his reaction to your work down to one expressive word. It means that you have some work to do to discover why it got that response, it is not handing you anything on a plate, true, but it is very very useful.

The more I comment as part of the Critique Club, the more I've realized that sometimes the details you are looking for come from reading between the lines. By this I mean you need to add up the comments as a whole and see where your photo missed the mark. The real challenge in critiquing is trying to give suggestions on how to correct the problems mentioned in the other comments.

I understand what you are saying. The person should have been more specific with their comment. Not to say it was bad or good in their opinion, just that maybe it was a first impression. If they had expounded on their explanation a bit it would have helped I think.

Hmm....the person may be a baghead now, but at the end of the voting they will be revealed. You may not appreciate the comment, but no reason to call someone names in the forums. You may want to rethink your original post and edit out the name calling as that solves nothing.

As previously stated in this thread, instead of getting upset over the comment, try to find a positive aspect of it. As in, take a good hard look at your photo and try and understand why the person found it dull. Not everyone sees the images the same as the person who took them and no one feels the same about the image as the photographer does.

Does it make THAT much of a difference if he/she is hidden or not? I mean, you'll see who it is in 3 days 3 hours and 50 minutes anyway?

"Dull" should be considered useful to some degree. Granted... It wasn't the most tactful way for the voter to tell you that your photo exection and/or choice of subject didn't move him in any way.

Sometimes we just choose to be offended rather than take words for what they are.

it's interesting reading these comment threads. for my graduation exhibition (all those many years ago) we had PUBLIC critiques. we each found a place in town to mount a show, and it was up for a week. a map of all the bfa graduates' exhibit spaces was published in the school paper, the local paper, and put up on bulletin boards and telephone poles, with dates and times of the public crits.

usually about 50 people or so showed up. art students, professors, and interested locals, who may or may not have known anything about art. in other words, the real world. on that day, you stood up with your work, and answered all comers and listened to all criticism. yes, people cried. sometimes people were vicious. but it was a very useful experience, as it let us separate from our work, understand that we are not our work, and criticism can only help us grow if we examine it well.

so, stop, listen carefully. if the crit is truly coming from a malicious stanpoint, ignore it - it's the critic's problem, not yours. otherwise, use it to improve your work.
