Finally! The 300D is waiting to be picked up at the store.
Nice timing as I need a better quality shot for the Urban challenge. My Olympus lacks the quality needed. But there might be a problem to make it in time: How long time does it take to charge the batteries?

Hi. Not long. I had charged mine in about 1 hour, and it then lasted a whole day on that charge. Hope you enjoy it, I am pleased with mine. It is better than what some of the forums have been saying.

I charged mine for about 2 hours, which gave it a full 100% charge. The light shows fully charged sooner than that, but it is only about 95% charged at that point. That was on Saturday. I have yet to change to my spare.

i was about to ask the same question - just about.
picking one up on thrusday - and wondered if i needed a 2nd battery right off - or if the charge lasted for awhile.

trying to make the initial purchase as cheap as possible as i am stretching the budget as is...

what size memory would you recommend?

When I started yesterday the battery indicator was showing 'low', I shot 80+ pictures with the camera left continually on for about 2 hours and later reviewed then on the LCD, the battery indicator still shows low.

that'll be nice considering the rechargble on the kodak i use
i get maybe 5 pics if i dont use the flash
i've spent $200 this year on duracell disposables for it
they last awhile.. CRV3's

there are times when i turn the thing on and the damn battery dies before i can turn the macro on ;}

i been aiming for dSLR for two years now - finally able to pick one up
i have really missed the options available on my old SLR - but the expense of film - and lack of a darkroom has caused me to focus more on mastering this crappy point and shoot...

a whole new world is about to open up i think

...... was my "words" when I took out the camera of its bubblebag. Mouth wide open, drooling.... well you get the picture! I mean WOW I absolutely love the camera so far!
The differences between this and my old piece of junk is huge, to put it mildly.

Just tried to install the software included, and ended up in a hars sudden reboot while installing. Anyone knows why?

The battery is now charged, charged it for about 4 hours. As you should alwas charge a new battery atleast twice the time than specified the first time.

I went with the Microdrive 1gb. Most space vs. money.

that would take forever to download to the pc if you filled it...

hmm - thinking maybe 256 or 512

I'm getting a 512M flash.

I don't like the idea of having my photo's on a tiny little drive like that.. scared of what might happen if when changing cards I dropped it...

atleast I know flash memory is fast, and fairly reliable, I've never lost a thing on SD or CF cards, and they get handled a lot, and some not very nicely.

Also the microdrive would chew the power a bit more wouldn't they???

I'm using a Sandisk Ultra (new) 512MB with my 10D and I carry a slow 256 & a couple old also slow 128s but rarely need to use them. You should consider a "fast" card, since the Rebel can prolly take some advatage of the extra speed, and besides, it does make a difference in transfer time to the 'pooter if you use a USB 2.0 card reader (cheap, and a must!).

This has been posted before, but it's a good reference...

*Taking a brake in my shooting* =)

My thoughts when getting the Microdrive was that I plan to keep it inserted all the time in the camera, so I dont have to worry about dropping it. However at that point I didnt realize how slow the communication between CPU and camera was. Will be fun the day I need to download 1gig of pictures! Phew. ;)
Umm.. did some rough calculations, 1 image (at the largest jpg mode) takes about 17-18 secs (!), I can fit aprox 330 pics in this mode, so 330x18=5940secs, =1.65 hours.... whoops!
But, when downloading you have "all the time in the world" its when taking picture the speed is crucial. and theres like 0.1-0,5sec difference between sandisk CF and MD. MD is even faster at storing in most modes than Canons highspeed 256mb CF (according to www.dpreview.com).

About the powerconsumption issue, again www.dpreview.com in their review of this camera they said there won´t be much difference, noticable but not much. (if I recall the review correctly)
So far I´ve shot about 100 pics almost all with flash and alot of focusing flashbursts as I´ve only been shooting indoors. (bad weather)
And the "powerbar" shows half used. Good or bad?

sounds decent for battery life if you ask me. ( then again i havent had the best of luck with my batteries see above )
especially if you have been previewing them in the LCD.

i should be picking mine up tomorrow - hopefully
kind of excited- going to go with an $80 compact flash card 256M to start - will add more later when i actually have some money...

I ordered a 512M slow sandisk with mine, was cheap, AU$200, and that way I could afford my manfrotto 055 and 141rc head tripod with the camera aswell. $2180 all up, about $US1500.. just got to wait for the preorders/backorders to clear, and should have it the 30th..

should be worth the wait tho!

I bought a Sandisk 512mb card with mine, and it is also very slow to download. I agree, in theory you have all the time you like to download, but not always. Also, the photos are placed in individual folders on the card, so you can't download everything in one go, or at least I havent found a way.

Any ideas? Can only one folder be copied at a time? Would it be quicker via Windows Explorer, or can it not be done that way?

I noticed that too, the individual folder thing, after a desperate moment thinking I´d lost alot of images, and this was the way its going to be!? Well luckily it wasnt. :)
and yep, Win explorer should work, I read the manual yesterday and I think downloading from there is a good way to make this abit easier.(?)

Have you also noticed that sometimes the number of photos remaining changes. I had a real shock. The camera said I had 125 remaining, then it jumped to 225. I thought I had lost 100 photos. I hadnt luckily. And before any asks, I didnt change files sizes and anything that would cause that. I have now noticed this twice.

Is it a bug with the camera software?
