| So, what's the deal with Canon and wireless remotes? They can't make one remote which works on all the cameras? How hard can it be? I don't even know if there is a wireless remote that works for the 5D. That sucks... |

I suppose you mean to trigger the camera itself, right?
Yeah... my 300D had this nice little infrared thing that you could point at the camera and fire it. Made self portraits and family portraits (in which I was a part) a snap. Of course, it doesn't work with the 5D or 20D.

| That's why I've been using the 300D for the self-portrait challenge. The wireless remote is priceless for stuff like that. Haven't really looked in earnest for something for the 30D but initial searches show only short corded remotes. |

| I don't think even the 30D I have supports any wireless remote. I can only use the wired remote, which sucks. Even P&S cameras come with wireless remote. |

I wish I knew. The fact that their entry-level DSLRs have the capability, but anything using the "N3" style wired remotes does not, is screwy. it definitely would be nice to have a wireless remote available. For what I do, I probably would not buy one, but many folks, perhaps the majority, would find it very useful.

I hated this when I upgraded from the 300D to the 20D.... still totally miss it!

Could not agree more. There is a very expensive unit from Canon but hardly worth it.
You'd think there would be a 3rd party solution for this by now.

You can buy a really long extension cord for it though - I think mine is 50'

| I sometime see a cheap wireless version on ebay sometimes (Adit??). The reviews seem to be ok for the price (around $100 from memory). It's radio not infrared which is good. It's on my list to checkout sometime. It's just another rip off not having that ability on camera IMO (the camera should have duration settings - i.e. take a pic every x seconds for so many shots/so long). |

I use this with my 30D. It works great but is a bit pricey. It probably works with the 5D also but I don't know for sure. |

Wow, that's pretty cool. But WOW ... look at that price! (I think the infrared remote for the 300D cost all of $39)

Wireless transmitter & receiver for the 20D runs about $400.
Wireless remote for my 350D was $25
I have never understood that.
Guess my "soccer-mom toy camera" does have some benefits. |

I just read in Popular Photography that Professional style cameras do not come with them or built in flash because manufacturers feel that it is amateurish.

| I had a wireless remote for my Canon Elan (35mm) 13 years ago, I think the same one they use for the 300D. Seems silly to me to not have this option on the higher priced cameras. My guess is a marketing ploy, which Canon is VERY good at. They know pros and prosumers will spend bigger bucks on glorified (although wired) versions like the remote timer, or the wireless system mentioned by dickwilhelm. I do like the remote timer though. |

Was bummed to discover this when I went from 350 to 30d as well. no more cheap 20 dollar wireless remote.
There IS a wireless controller for the 30d and 5d. It is not a remote, it is a controller as in you can do much more than trip the shutter with it. As such, it runs 350 bucks as I recall. Personally I just got the wired remote with an extension cable. As nice as the wireless remote was on the rebel, it wasn't 350 bucks worth of nice. |

| If you know your way around electronics fairly well you could always build a IR trigger that plugs into the remote socket. |

i got a twin 1 for my 20d from b@h photo wired and wireless for around $75 don't know if they have it for the 5 but? just found the box it says it will work for the 5d and the 30d found slip it was $79.95+tax

You could always use pocket wizards. Not the most cost effective route, but still a possibilty if you already own a set....

I was just browsing B&H and found this one. Looks interesting, and it's RF, (radio) with a 100 foot range. Looks like it's quite new and not in stock yet. |

I use the Pocket Wizard as well. It's cheaper than the Canon model and I use the Pocket Wizards for my lights anyway. I just bought one of their new Transmitter/Receiver Plus II models (I already have a seperate transmitter and receiver units) so I can remotely shoot my camera and fire my strobes at the same time.

The 32ft. corded remote is sold by Nova Photography. I have bought a few things from him now and he is highly recommended by me.

how do you use pocket wizards to remotely fire your camera? I thought you needed to connect them to a 10 pin motor drive cord.
If not please let me know cuz I have pocket wizards and would like to use them to remotely fire my d70 or one of my d1h's.
I have as many receivers or transmitters at my newspaper as I need, so that's not an issue. I can't find the motor drive cords right now...but if I can do it without? |

That connector sure doesn't look right... the remote I use on my 20D and 5D for triggering the shutter looks like the connector at the bottom of this image:
