In case there are other football (American football, that is...) fans out there, here are some shots from this weekend's Steelers/Titans game. Granted, the Steelers really blew this one and I may need therapy, but perhaps posting these will be the beginning of my recovery.

I'm posting a couple of my favorites below... there are more at:

//www.thefreeds.com/misc/steelers/nashville/

There's a directory in there called "Boiman" which features a few random shots of Rocky Boiman, who is a neighbor of fellow DPC'er DougPaz!

Wow Alan! Great shots. What lens did you use? ISO 800?

Fantastic as always! I particularly liked the shots of Hines Ward injured and Gildon sacking McNair. They both really tell a story. Thanks for the effort!!

No kidding man, great shots. How close to the field were you and what kind of lens were you using?

Oh, and by the way:

GO CHIEFS!

Go Chiefs, eh? Yeah, yeah... :P

Seriuosly, thanks for the kind words... I was using my trusty, yet rather crappy (compared to the real pros on the sidelines) 300mm/5.6 lens, and I am on the field for the games (well, as close to "on the field" as is allowed... it's not like I'm running out for passes or anything...).

Oh, and I shot this game at a variety of ISOs. I kept changing it because the weather kept changing. It started out sunny, then overcast. So the shots were anywhere from 200 to 800 ISO this time around.

Doug had mentioned the "Hines Injured" shot... The Beaver County Times (a newspaper where I live) printed a huge shot almost identical to that one in yesterday's paper (in fact, the AP guy that took that shot was standing next to me). The caption suggested that Hines Ward was reacting to the way the team had played after the game finished. This wasn't exactly the truth -- he had just sat down after suffering a concussion! I find it interesting how news organizations will often stretch the truth a bit to sensationalize things...

Alan, excellent work as always.

What shutterspeeds were you working at? Do you shoot RAW or jpeg?
09/30/2003 02:16:52 PM · #8
Since the sky was always changing this time, I used Aperature Priority so the shutter speed was determined by that. The shots were generally between 1/640 and 1/2000. I try to get 'em at 1/1000th when possible.

I shoot nearly everything I do as .jpg rather than RAW. For football it would be nearly impossible to do them as RAW. It takes a long time for the camera to store each image, and if you're trying to shoot a series of 5 or so shots per play, the camera just can't handle it. And considering I'm shooting around 600 shots per game, the memory RAW would require would be absolutely huge.

Fantastic shots Alan, now as for therapy, before the next game you have to photograph some train engines at the get together Sunday morning =o)
How's that for therapy? By kickoff Sunday night you will be ready for more Steeler football.

I liked the Texans vs Steelers pics in your directory. Was that the game where we beat the Steelers at home and had 40 something total yards? That was a great one!

So, out of curiosity, what do you do that allows you to be down on the field like that?

I get a nose bleed in the seats I usually get stuck in. ;)

brentpaugh -- Yes, those are indeed from that whacky Texans game from last year. Now that was a game that required some serious therapy!

//www.thefreeds.com/misc/steelers/texans/

The ones you posted from the Baltimore game are actually this year -- that was on September 7 of this year (and we WON that one, thank you very much!).

krets -- I've been taking shots at Steelers games for my old hometown newspaper, The Punxsutawney Spirit. I used to be a staff photographer there in the mid/late 80s. I offered to do Steelers games since I live near the city and they didn't have anyone shooting them.

I did a Sports Photography 101 tutorial last year after shooting my first couple games.

OneSweetSin I'm looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the gang on Sunday! All systems are go! :)

Wow, awesome photos as usual! That first one "maddox-pressured," is definitely my favorite. You captured the action perfectly there. Heh, that game was really sad though, a crushing loss.

I agree with rll07 though, you need to start getting at least a few shots of the cheerleaders next game!!

I'm looking forward to that train thing too; I wonder how many DPCers are going to be there. It's kind of strange, but I have never been on a train or seen one up close before (the subway doesn't count)!

Well, I can guarantee you that as soon as the Steelers GET cheerleaders, I will definitely make a point of getting pictures of them. It's probably a good thing they DON'T have cheerleaders, because I probably wouldn't even bother with the game!

Did you take all of these pics? They are great, you should quit your day job and become a sports photographer. Excellent pics.
