With a lack of anyone else to tell I thought I'd share this with you guys.....

Two weeks ago I enrolled at my local college on a Photography course. Without going into details this past year has been a tough one for me and enrolling at college felt like my first major step on the road to 'recovery'.

The college offered 3 levels, the first level described what you would learn as 'basic' camera controls and 'basic' image manipulation. So off I went to the open day and asked if it was possible to skip level 1 and start at level 2. The answer was YES!

Today was the first day of the course. I haven't been to 'school' for nearly 10 years so was a little excited and very nervous! I was the only female in the group and already feeling intimidated when the tutor asked me .... "What makes you think you can do Level 2 without doing Level 1?". Put on the spot I fumbled an answer something like "I already know 'basic' camera and image manipulation and am looking for something a bit more challenging". This was followed by a few mumbles from the men and I was begining to feel I may be out of my depth!

Then we had to complete 3 'tests' to assess our skills and abilities. I realised this was make or break for me so quietly sat and did my answers...

Test 1 - 98%
Test 2 - 100%
Test 3 - 100%

Top of the class!! So I'm on cloud 9 right now and feeling just a little bit pleased that the 15 men in the room are no longer sniggering about my photographic abilities :)

Thanks for reading :o)

I read your post and thought I must say Congratulations. Taken up this as a hobby recently and it feels good.

.

Congrats!

What were the types of questions asked? Can you supply some examples? (pick the hard ones!)

You have obvious photography skill in your imagery as well. You may find this course to be a little too basic for you but it is always a good idea to get a solid footing with the basics. There is always plenty to more learn that you don't already know and build from that. You will ace the course.

And now maybe you'll believe me when I tell you you know much (much) more than the 'average' hobbyist - probably because you ask sooo many questions!

GOOD FOR YOU T, AM SURE YOU'LL REMAIN TOP OF THE CLASS THROUGHOUT THE COURSE :) (and there are a few thousand dpc'ers that will make sure you do it)

I don't have the test papers but will ask for copies next week....a few things I can remember....

some really basic questions such as....

How would you 'hold' a camera to keep it steady?

If shooting portraits what % of B/G to subject should you have? Again multiple choice answers but I ticked what I thought and then wrote a long explanation about it depending on exactly what sort of 'portrait' you were after!

A few questions about if using manual what settings would you use in certain situations.

Questions about the best sort of lighting for different subjects and situations.

OK, don't sound all that difficult and I can hear you all saying 'anyone could answer them'. The PS questions were harder as you had to explain the steps you would use to do certain things, and I'm not so good with PS!

Maybe level 2 was still too easy.

I suppose the next few weeks will show just how 'easy' things are going to be. BUT you can't get into level 3 without first passing level 2 so I definitely need this to go any further :o) Hopefully there will be lots to learn for me along the way :o)

That is exciting news, good for you for showing them up. Now bring in a portfolio of some of those gorgeous photos you have here and really show them who's boss. Good for you for going back to school too, that must be tough to go back after a hiatus from it. Best of luck to you(not that you'll need it).

A. In your teeth.

Damn, is that where you lost the 2% ? :-p

Congratulations! I've found myself in a couple of situations where I've been a bit looked down upon for being a girl too, but I find you can gain respect if you back it up with knowledge. At the camera store the guy behind the camera mentioned the Rebel XTi they would be getting in soon, and I was the one who knew all the specs and he was just like "well I'm not sure, I just read about it yesterday". So good for you! It's nice to see women get respected for photography.

Well done on the first step of joining, and secondly making the right choice by doing level 2. I hope the lecture ate his words when he saw your results, and realised you were in the right group. Keep up the good work.

**UPDATE**

Well, I have just had a call from the College with a rather unexpected proposition!

Basically, the course Tutor called to say she had discussed me with her 'boss' (always worrying) and they feel that my skills and abilities would be better suited to Level 3 rather than Level 2.

Unfortunately you can't do Level 3 without having Level 2 so they have said they would be happy for me to study both Level 2 and 3 on a Wednesday in with the Level 3 group.

Well I'm pretty chuffed but I think things might get a bit tougher for me from here on in!!

I'll keep you all posted and thanks again for your support so far :o)
