Anyone taken a look at this yet? I know not everyone has the computer to get it looks amazing!

Does anyone have this? Is it worth the money? I finally bought a nice cannon that shoots in raw so I know regular iPhoto will just have a hissy fit with large files.

Aperture for Mac

Haven't bought/tried it ... I have no problem with raw files and iPhoto either.

really? because my computer is having a hissy fit with my small images as it is. I can't even open it without it freezing. I think it's the amount I have in there because I'm a horrible over-shooter. Of course my computer not the one I'd be putting my new photos on anyhow. Guess I'll see when I start up with the new camera.

As of tonight I have a little over 4,000 shots in iPhoto (yes time to move some to my external) and it opens a bit slow initially but once opened I can open photos and do what I want just fine.

Imagineer is using it.

hmm. good to know, thanks.

I've been using for about 2 months. Love it! You need a lot of power to make it run right though. I;ve read on Apple Forums of people with G4's having trouble getting it to run correctly. BTW I'm running a MacBook Pro 2GHZ with 1 gig of memory.

I played with it briefly. It is a monster when it comes to processor and video needs. I ran it on a macbook w/ 2 gigs and it didn'tdo so well...seemed sluggish.

I have 34000 photos (exactly!) in my iPhoto library.

I heard bad things about Aperture v1.0. I think they've improved it a alot since then. Plus the price came down. Apple has a big announcement one day before Photokina later this month. Rumor has it the the announce will be about Aperture.

Adobe's Lightroom is getting good reviews. You can download the free beta.

Both Lightroom and Aperture are where photo workflow and management are going. Most people don't realize that PhotoShop is a pre-press tool. Wasn't really designed with the photographer in mind. Aperture and Lightroom are tools designed for photographers.

I'd be running it on a G5, not sure all the info on it but it runs very well. I guess my doubts about iPhoto are thwarted now and I realize it's just my computer (I have a basic mac mini, yes, shame on me).

I'll check out lightroom, thanks for the advice.

I love Mac and everthing mac. I HATE iPhoto.

Please, please, please, download iView Media Pro trail. You'll buy it straight away link here

This is much better for cataloging images.

Goog luck

Aperture is amazing..
.
Really the sort of program to make life easier for DSLR users and especially those who want to Shoot RAW. (Makes you smile just using it, especially when it auto-stacks similar images on import under single thumbnails, brilliant!)

Unfortunately it runs pretty slowly on anything but super fast kit.
I have an iMAC G5 20" with 1.5 Gig RAM and I'm afraid to say it is pretty slow for me... useable but slow with 5D RAW - I have some old 20D RAW files and it manages these better, but still slow... shame...

Hopefully future releases will address performance a little.. and maybe I might sell a few pictures and invest the cash in a faster machine... Aperture is really very nice, needs some additions like curves to make it perfect..

Aperture has just released it's version 1.5 and it runs on just about anything that's a Mac. Check it out! www.apple.com/aperture

Also, it now comes with a bunch of plug-ins to certain websites so that you can directly upload your photos onto websites like Pictage, iStockphoto, etc. It's great and getting better.

I use aperture for work and I LOVE IT. I do very, very little editing to photographs due to the ethics of photojournalism and Aperture has damn near replaced photoshop for me.

I have an iMac G5 PowerPC 2.1GHz with 1.5 GB SDRAM and the ATI Radeon X600
XT. There is a 30 day Trial full-working version and I think I will try out this weekend. It looks really slick.

Hope it runs OK on my iMac. If not... oh well... I'll post if something wonderful happens. At $299.99 it's seems like a bargin. :)

Cool, just downloaded it. Competition is good!!!! Apple had to do something to get Aperture out there with Adobe's Lightroom being available as a free Beta...

i have an imac core duo with aperture running but I find the Lightroom better which can run on both my pc and my mac. my own opinion.

if you are attending the photoexpo, Apple has a booth there and are giving 30 Day free trial downloads away.

i use iphoto to manage a library of about 12k pics, and it works great on my macbook core duo 2.0ghz with 2gb ram. i use the free plugin "keyword assistant" to help me with image tagging.

for fine adjustment of my images, in particular raw images, i have been using adobe lightroom (free beta available, which is valid until february).

i have used aperture on a friend's computer, and it will do the work of both iphoto and lightroom. in february i will likely either buy aperture or lightroom, not sure which yet. if it is aperture, that will likely be my main software for cataloging and manipulation (except of course when gimp and/or photoshop is needed, which is almost never for me). if i choose lightroom, i will still keep iphoto for library management.

Ok...

Downloaded, installed and tried it. Looks good for massive amounts of photos.

Got the dreaded spinning beach ball too many times on my iMac over and over again. . So... it's back to the PC for organizing photos and post processing, as I don't have the Mac version of Photoshop.

Aperture is a beautiful app and very well done, but I don't like the way it runs on the G5 Power PC iMac. Too slow for my liking. Maybe it runs better with the Intel processors.

Aperture is both very powerful and versatile but, more importantly, horribly flawed – at least until version 1.1.5. I am currently now unable to open my library of thousands of images which is due to Apple's sloppy release of version one (which simply replicated my files in its own library and Vault) leaving me with two 110GB files respectively. It subsequently crashed during start-up and has failed to reboot since (despite masses of memory). I've yet to resolve it, so naturally I have not been impressed.

Version 1.1.5 now uses 'referenced files' which allows images to be left in place while Aperture continues to create edited, non-destructive versions of them in its library. Aside from my problems I would say Aperture is great at doing the business of image processing, categorising, rating, comparing, reviewing and web-galleries but lacks a few RAW management features (such as vignetting). It could also do with a decent clone tool instead of its rudimentary and clunky 'patch' tool which is fundamental.

I'll post here if I manage to fix my seemingly fatal error, but I'd still recommend the latest version.

Cheers

How much RAM do you have? Aperture relies very heavily on RAM and hard drive speed.

I can certainly say that aperture screams on my PowerMac G5. Mind you I have 4.5 GB of RAM and a seperate disk for my photo's / aperture library...

EDIT: The only major thing still missing from Aperture is the ability to import existing XMP sidecar files. Better yet, be able to maintain those sidecar files WITH another application, like Adobe Bridge, or iView Media Pro.
- XMP Sidecar files are basically metadata files that contain not only all the image details, but also any adjustments that you may have already made in Bridge/iView. (no-body wants to re-edit all their shots just so they can use Aperture...)

A humble 1GB and I have an iMac not a PowerMac with the impressive setup you have! Apparently it makes a difference. :) Maybe next year...
