I have been wondering if perhaps, score wise, if I would get better scores if I used photoshop. I am doing a side by side comparison here and need some guidance as to whether my photoshop editing was done okay, and if it seems to be a better edit. It appears to have a lot more noise, but I couldn't find a way to reduce it. any comments or guidance will be appreciated. If I were to purchase photoshop, could I get decent results with Photoshop Elements, or is that program more like my Photo Impact program? |

Your noise issues have more to do with taking a dark picture and trying to lighten it past it's ability. Also, sharpening photos will always create more noise.
Here's your shot edited in CS2. I selectively sharpened your shot to try and lessen the noise issue.

I have never used photo impact but I looove photoshop. The thing about it is there is so much there that you don't know what to do with it all.
If you are gunna invest in photoshop, invest the time to learn it as well. Buy a couple books or get someone to teach you.
I've done the book thing and my boyfriend is a computer animator so he's showed me tons of stuff and I still feel like I know nothing.
As far as your images, the photoshop one was the best by far. The one done with photo impact is way too grainy to me, almost reminds me of a print in a newspaper. The photoshop one is better by far, and even better the way nborton edited it. |

The noise there is not caused specifically by PS, but by brightening your pic by what appears to be about 2 stops or so. You can usually get away with a bit of brightening, but any program will amp up the noise when brightening a dark pic.

What wavelength and escapetooz said is true. There really isn't anything PS can't do as far as editing goes. The limit is your mind.
Oh, and the thing about noise. I don't know what you had your in camera settings set to, but you should turn off any in-camera sharpening if you plan on doing editing in PS.

VERY noisy file. Needs more exposure, for sure. Here's a PS7 edit; contrast masking, focus magic to sharpen, select out BG and heavy neat image on it to reduce noise, a little hue/sat work in yellows and greens.
If you can swing the purchase, for sure go with CS2; it's just limitless in its capabilities, and you'll be working with the same tools as 90% of serious photographers, making learning much easier for you.

I have 28 more days for the trial on photoshop cs2. I am really feeling my way pretty well around it. so far I have used it on my seed entry and on my leading lines entry. I think I might have to buy it. The images are definitely coming out more real, and with better depth and detail.
