The trees are starting to turn here! So it's time to think about a fall foliage get together for the Capital District NY area (somewhere within 80 miles of Albany).

We did this two years ago and had a wonderful time shooting around Bolton Landing, and Lake George, ending the evening up at Prospect Mountain:

Last time, we had a 6 people, from as far away as Boston. In fact, there was only one person from the Albany area (me!)

I know there are now a number of folks on DPC from the Capital region, so hopefully, we'll have a chance to meet and shoot together.

If can get here from anywhere in fact, you are welcome to join us as well!

Right now, I am just seeing who might be interested, and what dates.

Some possibilites, all within an hour or so of Albany:

1) North to the Adirondacks (lots of other beautiful places there)
2) South to the Catskills (there's Kaaterskill falls, which is beautiful as the highest two tier falls in the east coast). Also, near a nice artsy town: Woodstock. There's also an abandoned resort at the top of a hill which might be interesting.

3) Southwest to the Heldebergs

Or we can think about some of the other beautiful landscapes nearby, even crossing into MA or VT, still an hour or so away.

So who's interested?

What date should we try for?

I'm in!!! That is if schedule allows and so far it does.

I'm in NYC and I drive to Catskills often so meeting there is no problem. However, Adirondac is kinda far and I'll need to crash somebodys place for such GTG.

Schedule something for peak colors and let's see what happens.

We'll see what others think, but I'd love to go back to Kaaterskill and vicinity. I've not been there at "peak" foliage yet!

When do you expect the peak colors to occur? I might be able to head down from Tronto (and birng a few other DPC's with me).

I'm originally from the Albany area and would love to try to make the trip up to see my family and attend a GTG. Set a date and I'll see if it's possible.

Two years ago, we had the GTG on Oct 12, and it was past peak in the Adirondacks. So perhaps Sept 30th or Oct 1st, if we are going north.

If we go south (e.g., Kaaterskill, not too far south--only 60 miles or so south of here), we could consider Oct 7th or 8th.

Of course, color continues to be nice if not spotty through October, so we have some flexibility.

Just some thoughts!

Fun! I'd love to GTG... I can do Sept 30th or Oct 7th. I don't have a preference North or South.

I'm always interested in a "local" GTG. The Litchfield Hills of NW Connecticut are supposed to be beautiful.

Where are the rest of the Albany area folks?!?!?!?

Please chime in, even if you are just saying you can't (or don't want to come).

I'd make that drive.. Let me know. Lake george is a bit far but I was just in Lakeview, CT (Limerock Park) and that's beautiful country. I'd love to get foliage pics.

If you do it up north then I can try to be there. I just need time to make arrangements for the kids. Its a bit of a drive from Burlington Vt. but I'd love to meet some other members and share ideas.

while pictures of trees generally bore me - I should be around.

:)

prozac works every other weekend, but if the schedule falls out right - she'd be in as well I'm sure.

Maybe if I hadn't cropped out the Swedish Bikini Team?
09/14/2006 11:49:07 AM · #16
yep ... that could have improved it

seriously, though - the wife and I have been to Kaaterskill Falls. It's nice, but I'm not sure it would kill an entire day - so the surrounding area would more than likely have to be staked out as well.

assuming we're around, we won't mind travelling to anywhere within say 250 miles of Albany - so that leaves (no pun intended) about a million other places.

I'm in Scotia/Schenectady and would be interested. We had some pretty good rain this summer - hopefully the foliage will be great in colors and long lasting. I'll follow this thread for future info :)

I agree, it would be nice to hit the surrounding terrain. There's an abandoned resort on one of the catskills hills near kaaterskill. I saw it mentioned on a hiking page; I just went to look for it again and found this. Not sure if it's the same one, and if there's true interior access or whether this person did it by trepassing.

Abandoned Catskills Resort

I am not pressing for the catskills area for the GTG, but I definitely want to get back there this fall, so if not as the get together I'll just head there another time (or two GTG's if anyone else wants to go!)

I got a lot on my plate right now with two houses on the market and one under contract BUT I would love to attend. Just need a date and time and place to meet is all.

What about Renslaerville (sp?) with Lake Mysotis and the falls at the old Hyuck Felt mill? Thatcher Park overlooking the whole valley with views to the Adirondacks, Berkshires and Green mountains? (also Selkirk train yards are in the area as well as the Port of Albany for stuff beyond foliage shots).

i was recently (and impolitely) kicked out of the port of Albany - i didn't think it was such a big deal, but the rail patrol cop dude wasn't too happy at all

somethin' about how'd you get here?, blah, blah, blah, trespassing, blah, blah, blah, i can arrest you on the spot, blah, blah, blah, don't come back here again, etc

i don't recommend driving into the train yard adjacent to the port to photograph train graffiti

:)

I'd love to join you! On October 7th the Berkshire Museum Camera Club is going to Innisfree Gardens in Duchess County about 1-1/2 hours south of Albany. They are absolutely gorgeous and at 150 acres there is room for everyone to spread out. The Camera Club only has 25 members and very few of them actually turn up for these excursions so more people would be great! The fee is $4.00 and it is open 11 -4 on Saturdays. Here's a link to the garden's site: //www.innisfreegarden.org/

I'll keep my eye on this. I'm down in Binghamton at the university and might be able to make the drive up to Albany, or to a location south of there. But I don't think I would be able to go north (unless maybe I plan on going home to VT for the weekend or something).

I guess I'm tentative now, but as things progress and plans start to become more concrete, I'll let you know for sure.

Thanks hopper! This is the first time I have posted here, what did I do wrong so that the link didn't work? Or better yet, how do I post a live link? :-) ~Sharon
