| I have this probably stupid idea to open up my camera and remove the hot-mirror so it could do IR photography. The idea stemmed from the fact that I haven't been inspired to take photos lately, so I thought maybe with something new to play with, I might take photos again. Is the modification very difficult? |

How about some self portraits man? We got a crazy thing going on over here. That will get you out of your funk and keep you from destroying your camera! :-P

quite ready to do it... aargh.... should I?

If you do do it your camera will become a permanent IR camera. You'll need another camera to do regular photography.
If you want to experiment in IR there are filters that can be used to different degrees of success. |

As a fellow user of the 5600/5200z I plead with you to spare the life of your little friend :) Seriously though, I would be more inclined to invest in some IR filters or by spending quality time in PS to achieve the same result. If those two options fail, you can sell the filters and then hack the camera... But I would still sell the camera w/o risking damaging it and purchase one suited for IR photography.

thanks... I stopped myself (thanks to some encouragements from you guys). I'm gonna get myself a used and cheap digital camera and modify that instead. At least the damage wont be so severe if all fails.
To answer some of you - yes, I do have an IR filter (R72 Hoya) but using it on my camera needs very long exposure times, making it almost impossible for me, as I rarely carry tripods (travel light). Besides that, my other complaint is the focusing using the EVF for IR is simply unrealistic. The AF would only work if the light is VERY good.
