Hi Everybody,
We will be travelling through Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in the last two weeks of September. I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions to see and photograph sea birds, particularly puffins, gannets, murres, skuas and Jaegers?
We will be driving through Montreal, Quebec - New Brunswick - PEI - Nova Scotia (following the Cabbot Trail) and all the way from Port aux Basques to St. John's in Newfoundland.
We will not have too much time for long trips away from the main routes, but wouldn't mind if there are nice places to see within 10-15 km roundtrip hiking distances from the main roads.
Thanks for any suggestions... |

If going via the Bay of Fundy coast through New Brunswick, take the trip to Grand Manan Island. There are tours (Seawatch Tours) from there to Machias Seal Island which is a sea bird sanctuary. Mostly Puffins, Arctic Terns and Razorbill Auks. (Machias Seal Island has been in the news of late with relation to the Terns.)
Also, from St. Andrews by the Sea, N.B. you can go whale watching on a tall ship.
For other sites, at the start of the Cabot trail, Louisburg is worth a stop. Also, the coal mining museum in Glace Bay, N. S. is worth a stop.

If you're flying here and landing in St. John's, go to the Bay Bulls area. Lots of bird and whale watching there. Also visit cabot tower and other site for beautiful sea and landscapes. Be careful though, once you visit us here in Newfoundland you won't want to leave. :-)

you can see the largest gannet colony in the world at the island off the coast of the little town of Pierce Rock, in quebec. I think it's called Bonaventure Island. Easy to find, once you get there. If you're on the Cabot Trail in NS, it's only a bit further along the way. the highest rated image in my profile is from there

Lots of hints than we can actually manage to do in this trip, but they give an idea for our next expedition ;-)
Anyways, thanks so much, I really appreciate it.
And Brian, as a side note, I am totally aware of the risks of visiting Newfoundland. As a matter of fact, we have already updated our trip plan at least two times to give more time to Newfoundland :-)))

Hi there, I live in New Brunswick and have travelled all through Nova Scotia as well.
NS is just an absolutely gorgeous province all around. There is just so much to see and do. The Cabot trail as has already been mentioned is breathtaking, it's green hills for as far as the eye can see. If you travel to waterside cities such as Digby, and Lunenbourg, you'll get a chance to experience the typical maritime ocean feel. There will be beaches and wharfs for your bird pictures, as well as plenty of historical sites and beautiful landscapes there as well. Louisbourg has a completely historic village where everything is exactly as it was hundreds of years ago.
