Just going through the 'at rest' selection and I am struggling to vote, what is going on??? How can you learn from this site if most of your time is spent voting on snapshots. I mean a little more effort wouldn't hurt would it?

i agree. i am by no means a professional, far from it, but.. i'm sorry, tooo many pictures of animals. if you posted a cat or a dog.. you got a 2 from me, sorry, after the first 10 i got bored with them.

Good luck to everyone though. :)

There's a lot more to DPC than simply voting on challenge submissions. If you want to look at good shots particularly, look through the 100+ challenges at the winners.

Also, picking out why photos are good can only be done by comparing them to lesser photos. Voting across a wide range of abilities means you can find out how to improve.

The major problem is that even the voting is influenced by the proliferating snapshots..

Just mathematics.. if snapshots get the majority what would you expect to be elected major?

If you really did that then you shouldn't be voting. Some of those animal photos were fantastic. I do agree some were very snapshotish but at the same time some were excellent technically.

Not sure what you mean there.. :-/

I think the argument is that voters suck at taking pictures themselves...

The meaning looked like a natural consequence to me..

After experiencing with a few challenges (8?), I must say that my opinion on the scrutinity process has deteriorated with time.

Personally, I would welcome a panel of judges which have different experiences (and possibly tastes) in photography and that, of course, should not post their pics to avoid obvious conflicts of interest.

The current voting system is way too chaotic and that is pretty easy to analyze.

I don't mean that winners do not deserve to win.
Because of the current system, IMHO, the winners are good and lucky pictures.

They should be just good if we really have to learn something about the process. To be lucky cannot be learned.

I don't know why all the whining. I agree that 75% of the At Rest entries are snapshots, but it is not the end of the world. We're all allowed to submit crappy pics from time to time. I don't see this as a disturbing trend. The challenge topic just happens to scream snapshots, that's all. For example, imagine the beauties that would come from such topics as Family or Pets. If it hurts your brain so much, stopp voting and take a break for a challenge.

I got a 4.9 and it isn't a snapshot either. Is it just me or are the voters starting to only use the 1 thru 5 in voting and forgetting about 6 to 10?

Ok, people complain that the artsy shots get low scores... Now people are complaining that there are too many "snapshots" ? Make up your mind, people.

As for "effort", I'm one who did a 'snapshot', and I'm a little peeved at your attitude...

For my shot, I spent more than half the day working on getting shots while using the manual setting on my camera (learning experience in and of itself). So, please don't sit there and accuse me of being flippant/lazy with my entry.

Give me a 1 if you want, that's fine, but don't sit there and call me or anyone else lazy if we didn't fulfill your *vision* on what a proper "At Rest" entry should be.

Surely the point is here that if you want to progress in anything then a little preparation can go a long way. The better the competition the more difficult it is to win, which just drives the desire to take better photographs.

I am a little tired of the endless defence of the mundane rubbish that is creeping in to the challenges. I think those people that submit the no thought snapshot should take stock and think about their photography a lot more.

i do agree with most of the people here, my first time to join on the challenge, and i did noticed a lot of snapshops which i do admit thought to be totally effortless, coz the one ive submitted, it took me almost the whole day to think of the concept and do the trial and error thing. And yeah, a lot of animal photos of cats!...They all look the same, im sorry but i gave it low scores.

I certainly hope those that vote the snapshots at 1 or 2 are leaving comments as well. Some folks might just be lazy and throw in a picture for the challenge, but I think most look at their photos and think they're OK. If you don't leave a comment as to why it sucks, the submitter won't learn from the experience. Besides, would you agree that the winners of the past few weeks submitted photos that certainly are NOT snapshots? I would be more upset if the snapshots were winning challenges...

everyone progresses at their own pace. sooner or later the people that take snapshots will become discontent with their 3's and 4's and try to immitate techniques and photos that have been done before. just give the process a chance. i think what jacko said makes sense, that this challenge lends itself well to the snapshot or candid type photos. there aren't too many ways to set up a studio shot that would have fit the challenge description. i think certain topics call for different voting scales and methods, and claiming that there is an increasing amount of rubbish is sad and ignorant, because if you have been here long enough, you know the quality has definitely skyrocketed since the sites inception, and i don't expect that to end anytime soon.

I believe we have a very wide range of experience levels submitting to challenges. If we really want a solution to this so called "problem" then there ought to be an option to rank yourself as beginner, novice or expert and submit to challenges designed only for those levels.

This would cut down the challenge entries to each contest, allow each level to vote for their peers and save us all from those who would rather whine than give encouragement to the up and comming.

I would rather look at a good snapshot then a bad and fake set up shot any day.

I agree, but the key phrase is "good snapshot."

People who submit just to submit should think before they upload a photo, IMHO.

I wish that someone could define snapshot in a meaningful way...given my score I imagine my entry is being looked at as just that. In acutality I made two trip to the site, fought the light problems with the knowledge and equipment at hand, and if people were to leave comments telling me how to have overcome obstacles rather than making assumptions it would have been helpful. I find myself wondering what the criteria really are - especially since we have the ability to private message and ask about intent and problems.

Although that is an interesting idea, as a begginner I personally enjoy competing against the "experts" It gives me encouragement to work harder I enjoy seeing how my photos rank next to theirs in the end of a challenge (although mine are usually close to the bottom). Everybody here was a begginner at one point in time, whether now or twenty years ago, we all have to start somewhere.

Also, another problem with that suggestion is that who is to say who is an expert and who is not, although I admit that I am a beginner in every sense of the word, there will be photos submitted in the experts challenge that others do not feel belong there and that would open up a whole other can of worms in my opinion.

What I get a kick out of are the pictures of people's heads that are suposed to denote "pensive" or other deep thinking type attitudes.

Ok time to clarify this thread,

Just because you get a bad score doesn't mean you didn't put in any effort.

A snapshot for me is just that, Oh that'll do snap snap it's in the challenge.

Jeez everyone takes a snapshot every once in awhile, I suppose it is just the nature of this site, those that put more time in wish to get more time out of it, and voting for snapedy snapshots is frustrating.

Argue about this all day, but if the photo looks like a quick job your gonna get bad scores, having said that I took a good portrait for the life challenge and still didn't avoid the 1's and 2's so be it, human nature.

Do whatever you like, my voting is set if it looks like a quick snapshot without thought and the challenge title isn't 'quick snapshot' then I'm gonna give you a low score, I have voted on over 100 in the current challenge and sent nearly 30 comments.

My personal favourite 'snapshot':

Soft Sun (Contains nudity.)

37 mins.. That's what I call snappy! Quality always shines through.

Not seen much Dr Jones recently.. Obviously off on Barbados.. again.. :-)
