Hey all,

I call upon the vast knowledge of the mighty DPClan once again...

I'm making up some package deals for family/group portraits and just wanted everyone's thoughts on if 4x6's are bought anymore. I've got 5x7, 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20's available in various packages.

I will have 4x6's avaiable seperately if people want them. However, if 4x6's are still popular I'll gladly put them in packages, I just want to be careful not to waste the client's money and my time with them if they aren't wanted.

Thanks for the thoughts!

I just sold about 40 of them... but, they wanted them to put in those flip type albums.

I find that typically if it is an event (party, wedding, sports) they will buy the 4x6 to put in photo albums. Most photo albums have limited numbers of pages for other sizes. Hope this helps.

I sell more 4X6s than anything. Wedding for example - bride & groom & family buy larger prints - everyone else buys 4X6s. 40 image portrait sitting, I might sell 10 enlargements, but will sell 40 4X6s (proofs). I charge $1.52 and they cost me .19..... well worth offering!

Definitely offer the 4x6's! As Cindi says most of what you sell will be 4x6.

Hm, at this point the family portraits I've done have ordered 5x7's and bigger, though I didn't offer them 4x6's.

Would you offer packages with both 5x7's and 4x6's?

I offer both, yes.

Ofeering your customers more choices, increases your potential for sales. Also, they may order a 4x6 from you and then later look at it and decide to get larger prints of that photo (another chance for a sale).

Yup, nod, affirmative.

My last family sitting ordered 5x7's 8x10's and 11x14's but no 4x6's. Since she a friend I asked why -- for the same reason you're asking. Her comment was, that it's hard to pay more for a 4x6 when you know Target or Walmart sells them for pennies. Paying more for an 5x7 and up she could mentally justify mainly because she didn't know what those sold for.

When we look at redoing our portrait packages I think we will sell them but offer them at an "add on price"

Hmm. That's kind of where I was at. My question is why would anyone want a 4x6 when a 5x7 is available for a bit more. Other than the album issue that kawesttex mentioned I can't think of a reason. But that might be enough of one.

Thanks for all the great help!

Sorry, but the difference is buying a 4X6 from a pro of a pro shot and buying a 4X6 of your own snapshots at target. Its a justifiable $1.52!

I just shot a family reunion. I also shoot at clubs and print out 4x6 on the spot. I use 3 Epson picture mate printers. I supply them with a 100 print kit that has 100 sheets of photo paper and ink for 100 prints. The kit cost me $30 each and I sell the prints for either $8.00 each or 3 for $20.00 on the upper end at clubs. Or like at the family reunion I sold them for $6.00 or 3 for $15.00. At the family reunion banquite I sold $320 worth of images in like 3 hrs. Its a very good set up. On busy shoots I dont even have to use TAP Folders. I just put the prints a yellow 4"x9" envelope. Bottom line 4x6 is a great size and easy and affordable to print out.

True!
But I charge more than $2 for a 4x6. So if she wanted to pay even more for a 5x7 -- that's all right with me.

I sell quite a few with sports & weddings.

I buy them myself for proofs for bigger prints. They only cost what, a dime or something.

A timely question, as I've just sold some 6x4's for the first time in over a year... I don't advertise them on my pricelist, but I do occasionally get requests for small prints.

Generally it's for people who want to do Xmas cards and slip the small copy of the child/family/pet photo inside. I've also recently offered them as part of a school ball photo shoot event, along with larger options but I'm not sure how many have been ordered yet as the school hasn't place the order yet.

I charge $5 NZ (about $3.33US) for a 6x4. Yes I have a large markup on them, but it takes the same amount of time to prep and send the file for a 6x4 to the lab as it does for a larger print....

Cheers, Me.

I sell 4x6's but I really don't like to. I have had customers buy all the 4x6 and then make thier own enlargements. I am guessing at this because they told me how much they loved the pictures and didn't order any enlargements, just 4x6's and a mug. I only charge $1 per 4x6 if they purchase all of the poses, $2 seperate. I do not do packages either. I sell photos for $10 per sheet if you order within 30 days, $20 per sheet after that. I really need to rethink my prices. I have thought about making 4 4x6's a sheet size and selling it for $10 per pose so at least they have to buy 4 copies. They could keep a copy and give 3 away.

Slightly off topic, how many folks in this thread are using a lab for their prints? I assume you're not Mandy, if you're talking about sheet costs?

I only use inkjet for proofs, watermark them, and put a cover sheet in with them that says they may not retain their colour, and are not guaranteed correct colour/tone.

The prints I sell are done on a Fuji Frontier onto lustre Crystal Archive photo paper...

Just curious.

I just recieved an order from my first customer. She ordered all 4x6, some duplicates. I have mine lab printed and I send them 4x6 proofs. I charge $5 for a 4x6. Right now I do have mine printed at Wal-Mart as I state I'm a "recreational" photographer, not a professional. I'm not out to make a bunch of money as I don't feel my work is comparable to a professional. I also let them know the final product could have color variations. If anyone wants to peek at some of my pictures, follow the link below then click on the Between Rounds link.

I use a lab. I make up my own sheet sizes for the customer. 2 5x7's is a sheet, 1 8x10 is a sheet, etc.

Thanks for all the great thoughts.

What about those who sell package deals - do you have 4x6's and 5x7's in them or just one of them? And would it be more financially beneficial to offer the 4x6's seperate and not in a package?

I use MPIX for all my printing. I've been very happy with them, though I think they are US/Canada shipping only.

No 4x6's? It seemed that weddings were one of the big 4x6 sellers. I'm assuming they are advertised but not included in package deals?

Thanks again - keep the comments coming! :)
