Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Canon

I have an image I am working on to submit for the free study. The original is 3264x2448 but I am planning to crop it around the subject tightly and do an effect in the background.

My question is: Should I do the effect and any dodging or burning before or after I crop it? What, if any, difference would there be?

Crop it

This way you know exactly what you are looking at and your eye won't be distracted by whatever will eventually not be there

Fixing horizons and cropping are usually the first things I do in PS

I beg to differ on workflow. I would rather do the effects on the original , save that as a TIFF for future use and then crop. This is in case you have to recrop for other size prints, 3x2, 5x4, etc.

Ahhh, good point. I hardly ever print though, so I forgot about this.

I never know what a customer is going to order... 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, etc. I always edit the full picture and crop as the very last step in my work flow. This is especially helpful if the customer comes back and wants more than one cropping of the same image.

This is just for a challenge, I don't sell my photos.

Would there be a difference in how the effects look, if they were applied pre or post cropping?

The thing is, if the image does well in the challenge, you might still want to sell it here on DPC. Or, maybe you'll want to print it out for yourself. So if it were me, I'd still crop it last.

But to answer your question, if your using some kind of effects filter as well, and you're asking about resizing as you crop, then yes, many of the effects work differently at smaller scales than they do at larger scales. But if you're simply doing dodging and burning as you mentioned, then no, the effect should be the same.
