You can arrest dead people?
That's right...I went there. I believe she had something to do with it. Same with the father.

Wow!! I really hope they find resolution to this case. I don't think her parents had anything to do with it. THe entire investigation was bungled beyond belief. If they can find definitive evidence that would finally name a murderer and close this case, that would be so wonderful for her family. Wont bring her back, but at least there will be some closure.

I'm confused. Who is dead other than the little girl? You think the little girl is responsible for her OWN death? Am I missing something?

I dunno.. if a guy in Thailand confesses to unpublished and corroborative details about a murder on the other side of the planet, in a country where the child sex trade continues to flourish, and the authorities have been able to establish through visas, passports, address records, whatever, that he was in the right place at the right time, then I think they probably have their guy. Even just the limited information that's been released turns on a whole series of light bulbs.

Being in Colorado myself, I'm sure this will dominate the news and be rehashed in excrutiating detail for the next year. Oh fun... but sure to be more satisfying than the Kobe Bryant debacle.

Popular opinion has long held that JonBenet's parents were responsible, but the DA was never able to convict them. Patsy Ramsey died of cancer a couple months ago.

If the new allegations are true, it's incredibly sad that she died under a cloud of suspicion and never knowing what happened to her daughter.

Patsy Ramsey died of ovarian cancer in June. I think it was implied that Patsy killed her daughter.

Implied is putting it mildly. She was flat out accused. They tried to pin the weird ransom note on her since it was strangely worded and the handwriting was weirdly feminine.

I can't believe people are still talking about this...I guess the tabloids have a pretty solid readership :)

There was a documentary here in the UK a few years back about this, and to say the evidence of the parents guilt was flimsy is an understatment, a classic example of trial by the media

When rich pretty beauty pagent white girls get killed it makes all the news. A poor non-white kid gets killed and its just another statistic.

There were a dozen other child killings the same week as the Ramsey girl. Just as tragic and probably just as unsolved.

Here's wishing the best for those other cases.

It would be a sad case however rich or poor the girl was. The importance of her situation shouldn't be diminished because of her place in society. It was terribly sad.

I agree. Set media hypocrisy aside for a second and consider that this case is no less sad than those. This one just happened to be the subject of so much attention and speculation, and now it looks like it actually might be coming to a resolution. Everyone likes resolution, and it's good these days of strained relationships with law enforcement and in general to see something that has the power to restore at least a little faith in the process. It's a good testament to never giving up.

1. This isn't about media hypocrisy. The media get blamed for covering what sells. Try living without a free press for a while a see how you like it. Trust me, you won't. And I don't consider The National Inquirer "The Media".

2. I in no way meant to minimize the tragedy of the Ramsey girl. Yes, it is very sad any time something insane like this happens.

My point was that the public (more than the media) seems more moved by the loss of this innocent life than the loss of the many other innocent lives before and sense.

That said, I feel just as sad for the non-publicized children that were taken too.

you know i watched a segment on court TV a couple weeks ago and they released information that they had found DNA in Jon Benet's underwear but back then the DNA didnt match anyone they tested due to lack of technology. But they said if they find someone with that same DNA now then that would probably be the killer. So hopefully this freak matches it. I hope this is finally over.

This came up in that documentary. The investigators never released information about hair and body fluids found on the girls body that matched no one from her family or friends, but they just ignored that piece of evidence because it didn't fit in with there theory of what happened. If memory serves, this came out afte a new DA came in.

Another piece of supposed evidence that sticks in my mind was the lack of footprints in the snow leading from the house, which meant (so the police said) whoever commited the crime never left the house. When you looked at all the police photos you could see huge areas of land around the house (including around the window that was suspected as being used) without snow. But the police insisted a perp could not of left without leaving footprints in the snow.

That is not true. Remember Jimmy Rice? The little boy who was kidnapped, tortured, raped, killed and chopped in pieces and then buried in a flower pot by a man in Miami about 10 years ago too? He was not rich nor a beauty pageant kid and that was all over the news for a very long time.

I am glad they have finally found the killer. I can't say that I wasn't persuaded by the media's view on this case, but then again, I was only a teenager when this happened.

The one thing that bothers me about this whole thing, besides the child being dead of course, is the beauty pageant thing. Parents take their toddlers and turn them into women well before their time. Make up, sexy clothes, sexy poses. It is just abominable. These girls are turned into the object of desire or every pedophile out there. They are robbed of a normal childhood and turned into "objects" as such a tender age. These girls grow up to recent their parents ( I know one), some start having anorexia and bulimia problems before they even hit puberty. Many of these girls don't even want to do this but they are forced to by their parents. It is all just a very sad situation and in my opinion, even child exploitation. This is not a personal attack on any one person here, it is just my personal opinion so please don't hang me.

I heard on NPR this morning that he confessed to the murder. He also said it was an accident. I'm sorry... AN ACCIDENT!?! What exactly were his intentions when he shocked her with a taser, bashed her head in, and strangled her?? What did he think would happen? Did he think she would laugh and say do it again?? What a sicko.

Juneisy, I agree wwith every thing you said about the beauty pageants at such a young age.

I agree social status isn't always the most important thing. Maybe it says something good for florida as the last story of this nature was from florida too but when my husband and I first got married and had our daughter we lived in a VERY cheap apt. a little boy(5,or6) was taken at night, beaten, raped and left for dead in a dumpster luckily he got out by himself and was found wandering around a large road. that was HUGE news. on americas most wanted .everywhere. Then a second child went missing and same thing. huge news. that boy was never found and lots of accusations were made of his mother selling him for drugs because she was a junkie but neither of these kids were rich nor known for any other thing. Even if they had been the fact still remains that some a**hole was driving around in a pickup truck with ice cream stickers on it and ice cream truck music getting kids to come out of thie beds int he middle of the night for "ice cream" . I saw him one night at 2 a.m. while feeding my daughter because i heard the music. he had a f'n matress in the back of his truck. This was before the dissapearances and sadly I was quite tired being a new mommy who hadnt slept in months and didnt think anything more than "that's weird". i dont really care what social status these kids parents held They deserved justice. I'm not sure they ever got it or that he was ever found but they tried really hard. I'm sure of that. The coverage was outstanding. maybe had there been a case with a more affluent family at the time that would not have been the case but we'll never know.

It is a shame that Patsy Ramsey didn't live to receive all the apologies that she has coming to her. The Media virtually destroyed her life simply because the authorities were stumped and they (The Media)could not find a better target. But were desperate to sell the story and keep it in the spotlight and milk it for everything it had, except the facts.
08/17/2006 10:19:32 AM · #25
It wasn't the media that said the Ramsey family was "under an umbrella of suspicion" it was the local authorities. It was the local police that went on 60 minutes to say that the parents were somehow involved and did nothing to help the investigation.

I think people blame the messenger (the Media) for the message too much. Maybe I am over sensitive to this since I worked a photojournalist for many years.
