I have seen some very beautiful photos, infrared, on DPC and really want to learn how to do that. I have photosshop cs2. I can't seem to get it right as I am fairly new to photoshop. Can anyone help me, please? Thanks!:)

If you search the internet you can find tutorials to fake IR, but in order to take real IR photos you needs to buy an IR filter.

As previously posted, true infrared starts with using an infrrared filter. The previously posted link gives good advice on post processing these images.
There are ways to "fake" an IR look using photoshop. Try a grayscale conversion using the channel mixer, and emphasizing the red channel. It's not really that close to real IR images, though.

Making the blue channel come out black will give you sort of the effect IR does on the sky. The sky doesn't reflect much IR that's why it comes out black. Trees reflect lots of IR that's you they are white in IR photos.

This is one of mine. I used a Hoya R72 infrared filter. If you really want to do IR, a filter is the best way to go.

I would love to try some stuff like this but that filter is almost $300 bucks for 77mm!

yea but the 17-40 on the 5d is so awesome so that is what was in my head. but you have a good point about the 50mm. I will have to talk to the wife.

From what I have heard the 50mm 1.8 is one of the better lenses for IR on the Canons.

In another thread someone mentioned the Hoya 52MM IR filter should fit the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens. It was showing as $40.50 at B&Hphoto's website not too long ago. I'm thinking about giving that a go.

Is the post processing of IR pictures legal in basic?
08/16/2006 07:18:40 PM · #20
if you use the channel mixer, or RAW, yep. There are other ways to do it also that are legal.
