People,

I am editing and designing a book on the rape of Hellenic (Greek) culture by the Christians. It's a history book, basically. I need a photo (or maybe two) to use on the dust jacket of the book.

I am looking to have a "background" image (front and back covers combined, a 2-cover spread) of some Greek ruins that were vandalized by the Christians (that's most Greek ruins, actually), and then I'll have an inset image on the front cover that will be of a statue, probably a statue of a god or goddess, that has also been vandalized. We're looking for damaged goods here, semi-ruined temples with crumbling stone against the Attic sky, Venus with her nose knocked off, you get the idea.

Anybody got anything like that? I'll need hi-resolution originals, and I'll process them myself to whatever use we make of them so you don't need to worry about that.

We don't have a huge budget, but I bet we could swing $25-30 or so, which beats the heck out of microstock prices :-)

Just give me the $25, I'll buy you a microstock shot and spend the weekend drinking mint juleps on my porch.

Send me and I will waive the $25-30 fee. You can have the picture for free!

Now that's a bargain.

Bikini? You need a bikini to go to Greece? I was thinking of wearing my normal bathing suit. The "her", of course.

Instead of the ruins, maybe you can just get a group shot of these knuckleheads and call them a Greek Chorus. ;)

I am offended by what sounds like a mis-informed book. Especially if you are going to go around calling it a history book. Fiction perhaps, or maybe half-truths. I am thinking the writer and you as an editor should do a bit more research before you throw cruel words around like rape.

I have studied under the foremost Classical and Hellenic period scholar under the Acropolis itself, written and lived in Greece and can definitively say that there were many, many factors in the destruction and abuse of ancient greek statues, temples, odeons, stoas, etc etc.

Just a few cultures come to mind in which they much more prominently destroyed these places such as the Persians, Ottomans and Romans. In fact, it was more Christian policy to annex these fixtures into the fold, rather then ostracize an general history of a people. So please. In fact, the Greek Orthodox Church is arguably the oldest and strongest in all the world and even from the first missionary of St. Paul from atop the Pnyx, the message of unity and acceptace has always coincided in the Hellenic and Christian domains. It wasn't even until the rise of Constantine, did the Christian movement even get any kind of political strength to influence such a great state as Greece and its culture from without. And it is also true that many Greeks themselves cast down these temples due to lack of assemblage as it were, due the demise of the ancient mysteries that ruled in that area. And to speak of the statues, their noses were cast off many times due to miscreants that roamed late at night in the Agora, where many were lined up in a public forum for all to see and admire.

Let logic reign here. If in a country that has been 95-98% Greek Orthodox for the last 1500 years, including during the long tenure of Ottoman rule, why would such structures last like the Agora, Parthenon, I could go on, if the purpose of the Christian Church was to "rape" the very culture they represent. Or perhaps, logic would reason that Greek Orthodoxy, Hellenic history and Ancient Classical Greece are one in the same. Otherwise, the Greek people would have never had stood for such "raping" as you say for such a long period. The Hellenes are proud and honourable people. They would argue with this stance to the end.

Venus was Roman mythology by the way....

Bear, I am curious about your title. An extremely strong word (somewhat surprising) about an extremely violent issue. Not sure I understand your metaphor or see the connection. As a former Police Officer, I saw more than enough of its devastating effects.

EDIT: Spelling

You're right about Venus, that was me mis-speaking in a hurry. For the rest of it, theres absolutely NO reason to get into all that. I am not in agreement with the author's premises, but this is utterly irrelevant.

For those of you who have mentioned microstock, yes I can use microstock no problem. I just have a little bit of a budget and I thought I'd give y'all a shot.

PLEASE let's not turn this into a joke, or a rant. I just need some pictures for this cover, and I thought some of our European or Middle Eastern friends might have them. OK?

See my previous post. The author is a scholar, and a Greek, and he considers it to be a "rape". It's not for us to judge that. The word "rape" has an ancient historical connotation, even if in modern times we think of it as strictly a sexual thing.

The thing is, the book isn't being released in ancient times...

And from what I can read, Bear isn't releasing the book nor did he write it. He's looking for a picture or two. :-)

I won't rant on, but why in good conscience, if by your own admission you don't agree with the author, would you continue working on the book. It would be contributing to an unworthy cause and project. That confuses me...

That absolutely enough for me.

Will some SC (even you, Ben) please lock this thread? I'll just do microstock. I have no interest in fomenting a rant here, I just wanted to pay someone to use their photographs on a book.

Sign me disgusted.

Robert are you in a hurry to get the photo?

Here in portugal we have one monument that is a ruin of temple (caled Diana temple). I can get some pictures for you of it.

You can see it here!

I'll have to do a few miles to shoot it but if you can wait I'll go there for you.

You can also google for diana temple portugal.

Robert,
I have a few photos of greek ruins from my 2002 trip to Sicily (I think I have high-res files in my arhive, however they are made with omething like Canon G3 so don't expect an outstanding technical quality)

I believe these are from the ancient city of Segesta
