Quite a few folks here believe in spirits :P

well, I am a devout Christian and believe only what the Bible says about that topic (not ghosts, but what happens at death). That said, I do not believe at all in "ghosts" by the definition of a human spirit that stayed around after they died.

When I ran the (hoaky) grade-school newspaper years ago as a 7th grader, we investigated rumors that our school was haunted. Some teachers had strange experiences and whatnot. We brought by friend's aunt with us, who was clarivoyant (got no idea how to spell that right) and wandered around with her and a video camera.

After an hour or so of nothing, we went to check our lockers to see if we had forgotten anything we'd need over the weekend. Ours were at the end of a hall, pretty long, and only the first row or two of lights near the intersection were on, the rest were off - enough light to see down the hall by without being creepy, but still dark. When we got back to the intersection, my friend's aunt told us to turn the camera on and aim it back down the hall where we had come. We didn't see anything, but tried it.

When we watched the film later, there was a fuzzy white ball that moved around the hall. It looked like it was about the size of a pingpong ball and was bright, drifted from top left to bottom right rather close to the camera, then vanished and reappeared at the far end of the hall and zipped toward us before going away. When we slowed the tape down frame by frame, we could see two figures walk down the hall along the lockers toward us. We later showed the tape to people without telling them what to look for or where to look, and everyone could see the light, and when slowed down, they found the figures by themselves and pointed them out. The one teachered dragged me out in the hall to point to the exact spot she saw them in on the film.

End result, the administration decided ghosts were too scary for us to report on, didn't want the younger kids getting frightened. The story never ran and the tape got lost somewhere between my house and the school over the course of the year. I know it sounds like the old, "I saw it, I had evidence, but the dog ate it" story, but I'll swear by whatever anyone wants that it's true.

I believed in ghosts before, and I believe all the more now. Not sure what they are, don't think they're necessarily evil or malevolent, but they are there. And I know enough honest, down to earth people who have had experiences that I could never doubt it all.

I definately believe in them and believe i've seen and/or sensed hundreds in my life time. but all the woman in my family are that way. maybe it's hereditary. We're either sensitive to it or crazy. but I also have prophetic dreams quite often. and I know those are real. They are of odd situations that make no sense to me when I have them so i wouldn't know those things were about to happen. most of the time i wake up thinking "well that was odd, that would never happen" and then it does. It freaks me out every time.

edit: somehow in the middle of typing this filterkeyes got turned on and it took me FOREVER to figure out how to diable it. now i can get rid of those stupid caps and fix my spelling errors. sorry.

Absolutely! In fact, I even think that "ghosts" and other supernatural occurences can be explained in a scientific manner, but that we just don't have the technical understanding yet to fully explain them. Often times, occurences are passed off as being "crazy" until they are actually understood. Hell, compare science today and a couple hundred years ago. How many things then that were thought to be crazy ideas are now acknowledged and fully understood now that we've learned more? Besides, I have experienced too many inexplicable things to not believe...

What's interesting to me is how supernatural occurences tend to always show up as orbs in digital photos. Not only have I seen the same theory presented in numerous places, I tend to find orbs in pictures that were taken when I felt slightly uneasy. Hell, I even found an interesting orb right next to me in a recent photo taken at a co-worker's party (I'm on the far right). The black area is outside at night (garage door up) and there are no lights (or possible traffic) where the "orb" is.

No, I don't believe in ghosts. I do, however, have deeply held belief in spirits (e.g., rum, gin, tequila, vodka, etc.). :)

Hmmm... Nope! I'd rather just leave it up to everyone's imagination. :D

When I was a kid, I'm thinking maybe 8 or 9, I was in bed at night reading. I looked up and saw a dark figure glide past my doorway out in the hallway absolutely silently. It was taller than anyone in my family and kind of featureless, just a dark black shadow really. I remember being terrified by the unknown because there was no explanation I could think of. I didn't feel threatened by it, it hadn't even seemed to notice me at all. It was just so unexpected and so *real.* I turned my light out and went under the covers and tried by best to convince myself it didn't happen and I had imagined it.

To this day I can remember that feeling, the surprise and shock over seeing it. I was young enough at the time that I can convince myself I just had an active imagination. But I was also old enough that I was rational. And I know myself well enough, both now and then, to know I wasn't prone to excessive flights of fancy and that those feelings of surprise and terror were genuine.

So basically I don't know what I saw. It doesn't really prove anything to me either way. But it's enough that I remain open minded to the possibility. I believe there's a lot of things in the world we don't understand yet. Things that may one day be well understood and scientifically accepted. Just because we don't understand them yet doesn't mean they don't exist.

This isn’t a ghost story but it is sort of scary. My brother works at the same place as me and at lunch we take a car and find some shade in a parking lot near work. We park and eat lunch together
First thing out of his mouth,” I saw the Devil last night.”
First thing I think of was he saw a really bad mean person; someone I might think was devil like.
I said,”well?”
He said,”Me and Beth (his wife) were watching TV and I was getting bored and tired so I started to nod off. I was comfortable and the drone of the TV was comforting. Then someone grabbed me from under the armpits. It wasn’t like a dream; I was still in the room.”
“Do you know what it feels like to peel sunburn off?” He asked.
“Ya”
“That’s what it felt like; I was being ripped from my skin or my soul from my body. At the same time there was this thunderous voice saying just one word ‘NOW!’ I saw his face. It was dark and very red around the edges.
You know I’m not a very religious. I don’t know why I would be dreaming this stuff.”
My brother was quiet for a moment.
Then he said,” I was helpless as I yelled ‘NO’. Not a strong NO just a pitiful hopeless sound even to myself. Then I was back in my seat looking around the room; my armpits hurting. They still hurt even now.”
“Have you looked to see if there are marks under your arms?”
“No, I’m afraid to look.”
That’s my ghost story that really isn’t a ghost story.

Coincidentally, last nite was 15th, 7th month in the Chinese Lunar Calender. The Hungry Ghost Festival.

It is believed by the Chinese that during this month, the gates of hell are opened to free the hungry ghosts who then wander to seek food on Earth. Some even think that the ghosts would seek revenge on those who had wronged them in their lives. The reason why the Chinese celebrate this festival is to remember their dead family members and pay tribute to them. They also feel that offering food to the deceased appeases them and wards off bad luck.

both my parents died last year - my dad in march and my mum in november. a week after my mum died, i was in the kitchen with my son, making breakfast. my son was just over 2 years old then.

he was at the table, facing the windows (no curtains, floor to ceiling style), and i was at the sink. he suddenly called out 'papa and mimi are outside1!'

i came running over to him, and he was pointing to the window, insisting mum and dad were standing outside looking in. he was very speaking very clearly, there was no mistaking what he was saying, nor what he was meaning. i asked if he wanted papa and mim to be there, and he said, no, they're standing outside, we have to go to them. open the door, let's go outside.

so, of course. agnostic sceptic though i am, my heart was beating like mad and we dashed outside to see; the twilight of dawn, and nothing else. the sprog looked around disapopintedly, asking where they were.

were they there? i don't know. i hope so. maybe they were behind him, and he saw the reflection. it does somewhat warm me to think they were together, and could see my son, their only grandchild.

there ar more things on heaven and eath, horatio, than are dreamed of in your philosophy...

Far from a ghost story but something unexplainable that genuinely terrified my sister and I.

We were on vacation in the mountains visting my future college and we drove up to a mountain top to pull out chairs and look at the stars. I began to hear this strange noise that was nearly inaudible and at first thought I was just imagining it. But it gradually got louder to the point where I turned and asked my sis if she heard it too, which she did. It persisted in perfect intervals and it began far out across the valley but once we heard it, it began to get louder very rapidly to the point where we felt it was coming from the woods right behind us. The best way I can describe it is the screech a creaky door makes when you open it, but only one direction not a back and forth creak. We quickly agreed it was time to go and only afterwards shared our feelings with each other. We both were overcome with an intense feeling of terror like if we did not leave that very moment, something horrible was going to happen. I was literally trembling with fear as I threw the chairs and in the car and am now getting constant chills as I write this. The sound was unlike anything I had heard and it covered a vast amount distance in a relatively quick amount of time, it simply could not have been a bird or other flying animal. The fear of the unknown is unlike anything else. Surely not as cool to read as some of these other stories, but I'll bet a shiny nickel I was just as scared as anyone else. Moments like these makes me believe.

was trying to keep off this thread for fear of being ridiculed, but I'm brought up in a society where we DO believe in ghosts. Like zerocusa, we also have festivals for stuff like this (Asians, heh)

I've got a 1st-hand story to tell, and it involves a relative's death 4 years ago. My cousin, Kim, was killed in an accident. As tradition, we have a funeral service for him. Few days into the ceremony, my 3 year old (then) niece asked us this question while pointing towards the food offering table, "why is Kim eating alone there?". The ceremony priest later told us that usually very young child/toddlers can see the deceased. It was creepy!

xianart - I had a very similar experience. When my son was eight we were living in an apartment in Penang Malaysia. My son had never had problems going to bed (quite the opposite).

One night I put him to bed and said he could read for 10 minutes. Five minutes later he came running out to me, clearly upset. I asked him what was wrong and after coaxing he told me he had seen grandad in the window. My father had died when he was four and they were really close. I explained that he shouldn't be scared. That grandad loved him and would never harm him, that he was just saying hello. I said I wish I could see grandad and he was a lucky boy. Comforted he went off to bed.

I never thought of it being a reflection of my father standing behind him till I read your post;)

I was processing film one night at around 12:00am, while my roommate stood in the doorway and watched. He was bi-polar and claimed to have ESP.

He began behaving in a very strange manner. He said he was picking up something that would affect the road-trip we were planning to make. He kept looking past me and saying strange things like "This is huge. This is really important. It will have a big impact on the future. Your life is about to change." He was trembling and obviously distressed. Considering his mental illness, I didn't put much stock in what he was saying; even though he had never said such things previously.

I finally went to sleep and was awakened at 4:00am by the phone. It was my uncle calling to tell me that my father had passed away that night...at 12:00; the exact time that my friend had his premonition.

I am a Christian and believe that God enables us to sometimes see things. People in the Bible had visions all the time so why not now. I sometimes wake up from a dream not really able to tell if it was really happening to me. I feel the presence of people and pets who have gone around me. I see things just as I am waking up or asleep and wake up in the night and see the room bathed in different coloured lights. A large black spider used to also appear especially if my life was unhappy. I don't know why I see these things. they don't scare me and I've asked God to not let me see them if they haven't been sent by him...I still see them.
I don't drink alcohol at all and don't take drugs. I pray a lot and accept that these things could be real.
