| I am fairly new to this site. It seems like the contests are more of a contest in adobe photoshop editing rather than actual atristic photgraphic ability. Any thoughts? |

Its a contest on the best looking image, and using post processing well produces better looking images. But, the winning photos don't always have as much post-processing as many people believe.

Not at all. You just need to look at all the threads complaining about how restricting this site is. You are very limited in what you can do. What it does teach you to do though is to become moire proficient in your camera work and in doing so, it certainly does trick the viewer into thinking a lot of what you see is done after the photo is taken. In fact it is the other way around.

After spending a couple months here, I am rather convinced that the winners are the best photographers with the best knowledge of PhotoShop. It's a powerful skill combination.

I guess like the darkroom is a part of film photography, photoshop is also a part of digital photography. Yes there are things you can create in photoshop but its mostly not allowed in DPC entries (known as digital art). Dodging and Burning, light exposure, cropping, etc.. has been done for a loooong time
ohh and yes, I guess your right people who know how to use photoshop score well, just like people who know how to use the darkroom usually have "the best" images. The both take years to become "masters" I guess.

Take a look at the thread that karmabreeze points out. No tricks - a lot IS done after the photo is taken in many many instances. |

That thread is misleading. Most of those are raw originals which don't have things like contrast, saturation and color adjusments done to them which would be done in camera if it was shot in jpeg. Look at the straight from the camera challenge. Some people prefer to do things in photoshop but they don't have to.
