There are sooooooo many DNMC photos in this challenge - how hard is it for people to understand that everything in the photo needs to be black or white????
07/30/2006 05:26:27 PM · #2
Really? Where does it say "everything"...?
07/30/2006 05:26:35 PM · #3
Where exactly does it say everything has to be?
07/30/2006 05:28:47 PM · #4
It talks about the subject, not everything. Thinking doesn't have to be so narrow.
07/30/2006 05:30:27 PM · #5
my take is that they want the picture to look like it is b/w even though it is in color. If there was color in the picture it would not look this way.

I for one had real trouble deciding whether to include colour or not, in the end I went the wrong way and I am paying for it.

I would however like to say to you Kevin, it wasn't that it is hard for me to understand but maybe I interpreted it differently. In hindsight I was wrong, but I have learn't from this challenge and thats all I can hope for with every entry I make.

That might have been the intent, but other intepretations could be equally valid.

My thinking, for what little it is worth, is that if it has absolutely no color; then it could be considered DNMC. Although that would be pretty narrow thinking as well. My entry had more color then it should have (hindsight). And my favorite, during voting, had no color and I thought it was a fantastic picture.

I am one of those who voted that if the main subject was black and white then it met the challenge. There were actually some pics that were all black and white that I wished had a bit of color as it would have made the picture even more complete. I know of one shot inparticular that has a bit of color that is doing quite well in this challenge without any DNMC comments on it. I guess overall I was not quite sure how "Take a COLOR photo of a black & white (or grayscale) subject or subjects" gets turned into "everything in the photo needs to be black or white"?

My sentiments exactly. After that, it's a matter of judging whether the photographer skillfully maintained the integrity of the whites and blacks.

IMHO I don't see the point of a Black and White in Color challenge if you don't include a touch of color just to prove that you followed the rules.

07/30/2006 11:02:38 PM · #12
$%^&*! why can't you $%^&*! people follow the $%^&*! rules and think like i do?

everyone $%^&*! who didn't interpret this one like it was OBVIOUSLY intended to be interepreted is getting a 1 from me.

$%^&*! morons...

It is for this reason that I chose to enter the color on color rather than this one. Even within my friends we could not agree, which I knew would have many people voting differently.

This is why I decided to not vote in this challenge. I took the description the same way as you. I thought it meant take a picture in color, but using black and white objects so it looks like a black and white picture.

When I saw how much color there was, I decided not to vote in this one. It is too difficult!

This is as given below:
1.Set your camera in color mode.
2.Choose the sunject which is completely black and white.A black and White cat is not suitable if you include its colored eye wide open.A cat with closed eye will do.
3.Background may have colors but a picture with white or black or grey background will have additional credit.
4.Do not convert the picture to grey scale mode in after processing.

Am I right ?

1. Yes
2. Sounds a bit strict and I think could be argued - open for interpretation
3. Yes onthe first part - extra credit personal chioce
4. Yes

But this is just my lowly opinion. I am pretty flexible with everything except for points 1 and 2 (which happen to be the rules set forth rather than a description).

2 cents:
On another note, how many entries used post processing color adjustment to achieve the effect of greyscale?

How far can you go ?...

the rules say that "processing to black/white will result in DQ" ....

does this mean that changing colors to make it less colorful is OK since you are not "converting to black and white" ???

To me, this defeats the purpose of this challenge.

yeh my photo wasnt the greatest, but i got sick of all the comments telling me how my entry should have been in their eyes.

I'm actually surprised my score wasnt lower, because i think i had the most color LOL!

I'm missing the point here. Isn't this challenge OVER now?
08/02/2006 11:25:20 AM · #21
Ok I felt like it should have been a color photo that appeared to be B&W but voted overall on the photo even if it had color. The only ones I did not like were when it was obvious it was desaturated, shot in B&W or a photo of an existing piece of art. That being said I found some very good.

well so much for the shallow interpretation of this challenge's rules...lol

...on to the next challenge... hopefully, voters, especially those that doesn't have a camera, vote much fairly...
