Which lens will provide greater magnification for the subject, a 50mm macro or 100mm macro?

Are you asking which one wil fill the frame to a 1:1 ratio?

At the risk of hijacking this thread, let me ask a question in another way. Hopefully, it will lead to the answer that the OP was hoping for.

What macro lense (or equipment) will give the greatest magnification of something as small as the hairs on a moths antennae, without post-process cropping?

I believe it would depend on the specific lenses and the minimum focus distance.

you can also get extention tubes or other things they turn normal lens pretty much into a macro lens or you can make it so it focuses closer, (for the macro lens)

Neither lens will give greater magnification. If both lenses are capable of 1:1 macro, the longer lens will just give you a greater working distance between the camera and the subject.

Yes
Does the 50mm 1: 2.5 macro have the stronger magnification than the 100mm ?
Or does the 100mm ?? have the stronger magnification ?
My friend just got the 100mm macro lens and we were wondering .

Yes.. the 100mm macro would give greater magnification. It's a 1:1 macro instead of a 1:2.5, so it will give 2.5x greater magnificaiton.

The Ultimate among Macro lenses, the Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 lens, gives up to 5:1 magnification...

You're not thinking about the 50mm f/2.5 macro are you? Be careful that you aren't misreading the 1:2.5 as the aperture, which is essentially also a ratio=fraction.

I thought that was a 1:1 ratio?

Anyhow, like Jim said, if it is 1:1 ratio, it will have exactly identical magnification regardless of the focal length of the lens.

The 65mm 1-5x macro lens is cool, but is quite tricky to use.

You might want to experiment with reversed lens techniques to get a feel for it first with some cheaper equipment. If you use good zoom lenses, you can get a lot of versatility with no added cost.

Reversed lens stuff with P&S cam:
