The UV filter is an absolute must.
Is the Canon much better that the general brand?

The UV filter is a necessity but what about the lens hood?
Is it that important?

Thanks for helping me spend even more money ;-)

I disagree on the UV filter. Why put cheap glass in front of the expensive glass? I think a few others will chime in on this one.

The lens hood is a necissity IMO. Especially with WA lenses. Plus it gives added protection when banging into walls and stair rails and such.

I have a circular polariser as well as aa lens hood (the 16-35L hood, which is identical). Shooting in the sun both have quite an advantage I would say.

I'd rather scratch cheap glass than accidentally ruin an expensive lans.

The lens hood will help in that regard too.

But a lens hood will not stop dirt, debris, fingers, water etc. Why risk it. I am sure there are high quality UV filters out there.
