Challenge: Manual mode
Details:Show off your photographer skills by shooting in the manual mode only.
Extra Rules: To make the challenge more challenging your Tv must be = or > 1/125 and your Av must be = or < 8.0. Failure to shoot in manual mode and within the Tv and Av limits are grounds for DQ.

(hands up in air)
Question, sir. Why "Tv must be = or > 1/125 and your Av must be = or < 8.0" ? I'm learning and curious. |

Makes you pay attention to the details and not allow the camera to do all the work...watch those highlights and make sure it's not blurry...it's all on you.

Yeah that's a good challenge. Especially if everyone is used to auto modes. I think probably 98% of every photo I take is in Manual. Probably cuz I started out with a Pentax K1000 specifically so I could learn manual :-)
I couldn't imagine not using Manual, honestly. Sometimes I use aperture or shutter priority, but I always feel trapped. The most use they get is getting a quick opinion of what my camera thinks the exposure should be.
It's always wrong ;-)

OK, I'm the odd person here. I shoot in P mode almost 90% of the time because my camera is able to get it right for me. I only sometimes shoot in Aperture or Shutter priority (semi-auto mode) when I'm shooting moving subjects or when I need to control the DOF. I dont use Manual at all except for when I need long exposures or when I'm playing with my IR filter. I guess this Manual challenge will be really tough for me :p |

Honestly I wish I could get pictures to turn out well in automatic modes. I've met a few photographers who had some pretty incredible photos from full auto.

You've got a good camera. Me suspect that it is your personal requirements or expectations are too high :p That's a good thing! |

Ok, I never knew Av and Tv were considered manual mode...LOL I always thought that only the M was manual mode!
I guess I shoot in manual 100% of the time, then.

I don't mind using Manual mode for the challenge but I feel the limitations on aperture and shutter speed restrict what kind of picture you can shoot. The slow shutter speed pretty much eliminates anything handheld with a telephoto lens. Is this intended to force people to shoot a studio set-up with artificial light? Not my cup of tea but I suppose people will learn from it.

Ackkk. Running back to my corner now. I read his suggestion as Av and Tv being manual. It is the first time in the forum I have seen Av and Tv used other than talking about Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority...LOL
In that case, I only shoot in manual when doing studio portraits or in difficult light. ;o)

I've never shot in any modes other than M but only to see how they worked. P and A seem too cold. I've never liked the results so M is where I keep it tuned.
Considering this is a learning site, I'd hope that more people use M to really feel or control what's going on. It's a challenge and by no means easy but very rewarding.

You're not alone. I shoot in Aperture mode most of the time, Shutter mode once in awhile, Manual rarely - exp comp +/- gets used alot. ;^) |

He said => 1/125, so it's faster shutter speeds to be used.
I think the aperture should be =< 8 (instead of < 8).
Overall, it sounds like fun. ;^) |
