Sunday morning my hard drive crashed (why is the most important part of the computer the most fragile?). While alot of my stuff is backed up I have a few projects that ,I hate to say, I haven't been backing up as often as I should. This is really bad because I bought an external for the sole purpose of backing things up. Well, now I have to pay for my stupidity. I gave my computer to my local tech guys that have never failed me before, but this is beyond them.

Anyone have any suggestions where to send it and any idea how much it might cost (its a 140GB drive)?

I've found a number of places online, but am hoping to find someone with personal experience.

I had a laptop that crashed and took it to Comp USA. I bought an external hard drive and they recovered the data files for free. This was a couple of years ago but they did a great job. I don't know if they still do it or not.

GetDataBack If you can slave the drive and boot clean this should work.

If not then may I recommend these guysOntrack Data Recovery they are very, very good and have saved my butt a time or two.

Good luck!

Best in the business, but they charge for their expertise.

Contact them to setup a survey of your drive which costs a small amount. At that point they tell you what they can recover (usually everything) and how much it will cost. If you can mount the drive in a machine they can hit from the internet, they can do it all remotely and same day. If not, you ship it there.

Have used them multiple times for business. As I say, they aren't cheap but they are the best at what they do.

The think the independent Mac store I usually trust still recommends DriveSavers. Not cheap : (

I suggest me. I have most of the software side data recovery software on the market. And I'm really cheap. Also, if I can't get it, the 500 or so that I have done, I only haven't been able to recover 15. I can tell you Drive Savers or any of the other places will charge you at least $1000.

PM me if you're interested. I also have a guarantee.

This is why I love this site.

I just got off the phone with my tech guy.

He said that he was able to get it to slave, he actually ran GetDataBack and said what he got was just a jumbled mess, but that most of the data could probably be saved, it was just beyond what he could do.

cryingdragon- I'll definetly keep you in mind. One of my long time friends did data recovery for about 3 years before finding computer security a much more lucrative profession.

Back up, back up, back up,back up.....how many times do people have to be told? If you KNOW you are like me and will just forget then use an automated save like the one in my signature.

My computer has so much info and personal data on it that I just can't afford to lose if it was stolen or died on me, I just cannot understand how people don't back up daily. It must cost a fortune to get these experts to salvage after a loss like this.

I really hope all is well with you, vxpra. Good luck!

Heheh. I do computer security and I can tell you if I had OnTrack's revenues I would be posting from a beach on Tahiti beneath my solid gold umbrella admiring my 1DmarkIIn and the 5 spares sitting next to it while sipping the drink Claudia Schiffer was holding for me.

There is data recovery and there is data recovery.

this year, my colleagues and I have recovered well over 20 hard-drives alone that would not even auto-detect.

Purely by putting them in the freezer for a few hours then slaving them and ghosting or copying the data off them while they are still cold.

This solution is only really handy if the drive is fairly old. (i have heard several theories about why it works - bearings, read/write head distances etc.) Not sure why it works but it really does.

PS. once the data is off, put the drive in the bin, coz once they warm up again they usually go back to being stubborn!

Just wanted to say thanks for this particular suggestion. To my horror, I was about to back up some of my shots to my "photo drive," which is a 250GB drive I use just for photos, and POOF, it wasn't there!

My computer recognized that the drive existed, but said it wasn't formatted. AAAAAH! So I'm now up at 2:30 a.m. and have finally been able to get data off of it with this program. I'll finally be able to get some sleep tonight.

I always back stuff up to this drive, and then later move it to DVD, BUT I have been pretty lax at burning the DVDs and hadn't done it since January! So I was at risk of losing virtually every shot I had taken this year, and I have not been a happy camper this evening (just ask my wife).

Soooooo... to everyone else who has already said it... BACK UP YER STUFF! :)
