I assumed this was covered already, probably in multiple threads, but I haven't found the right search terms. So if that's the case, please post a link.
If not, can anyone succinctly describe PS 7 vs CS vs CS 2? Are they alternatives to each other? Or is it just a progression of versions?
Also, is there free or low-cost editing software that's not as versatile? Right now I only need to use curves, levels, etc. I have a feeling PS is too much for me.
I have the budget to buy PS, but not necessarily the need.

| The only version of PS I've ever used is 7. But, I know a lot of graphic artists who claim you can do anything you can do in PS with Paintshop Pro. I have Paintshop, but I don't see that it's nearly the powerful tool that PS is. |

| If your looking for free, why not try GIMP. Someone else will probably have the link handy. |

Sorry, but those artists are incorrect. At a certain level of manipulation that is true, but PSP is handicapped in MANY ways. It is, however, more powerful than Elements most of the time. |

| if you dont need the power of photoshop - look at Adobe Elements, has most of the functionality of PS its just missing a few things ;) |

If you are a total newbie to photo editing software then I'd reccommend to start with the GIMP. It's a complete full featured photo editing program and it's totally free. There is a dedicated group of software developers that keep improving it all the time and there are many tutorials available too.

If it is ease of editing you are looking for try the demo of MS Digital Image Suite.
MS Digital Image Suite There's a trial in the sidebar on the left.
Super easy UI and as good and/or better than Elements and the likes. Uses PS filters, has an excellent pano stitch program.
Can be picked up very cheap at Costco and the likes...
Digital Image Standard is the Editor only
Digital Image Suite is Editor plus Library (highend organizer)
Digital Image Suite Plus adds Pinnacle v10

You can get a curves add-in for Elements... I forget the link, but it was discussed here in the forums within the last month.

Buy a Wacom graphic tablet and it contains a copy of free copy of Adobe Elements.
