I just received this email:

Great news: Adobe® Lightroom™ beta* software 1.0 for Windows is now available. Download it today and discover an easier way to import, organize, edit, and showcase large volumes of digital images. Designed by photographers, for photographers, it's software that works the way you do. And with its new Windows compatibility, it's just waiting for you to try it.

Just watched the video, looks great! :)

I have not been that impressed with the Mac version. Just can't get around any workflow for it.
I still think the dedicated programs are of much better quality. Not trying to jam too much in. ie: PS and iView Media Pro. They do specific things and they do them very well.

Got the email too, can't wait to get home now and give it a try! Anyone lucky enough to be playing with it now, let us know what you think, please.

Can't see what all the fuss is about really.
OK it allows you to batch process a shoot, but for anything serious I would be dropping into PS anyway.

The image classification system is no-where near as good as iMatch.

My first impression is its a jack of all trades and master of none!
07/19/2006 09:05:36 AM · #11
for sorting and looking through images, and comparing them to eachother I think it is much better than imatch. a very much nicer display and feel and smoother.

I have also printed a number of shots through lightroom, and it went very smoothly. Very nice for adjusting to different sized papers, and doing slight alterations to the file if need be.

I miss a better keyword ability though (imatch has a very nice solution)

I miss the colour rating system as well like in adobe bridge.

I think lightroom would work very good for previewing images with clients and selectnig images, culling images out, and giving them 2,3 or 4 to look at at a time.

no to mention that the editing done within lightroom (in which you have a surprising amount of option) is all lossless edited (no changes are made to the original.

This is especially great for cropping. When showing or even just saving images for later I want to crop the image how it is going to be in the end. However in regular photoshop, once cropped always cropped, you can't save a crop as a layer (unless of course you convert things into a smart object)

I am so looking forward to installing this on my brand new Dell laptop with a 1920x1200 resolution monitor. :-)

Been waiting for this for sometime.

Any thoughts about this VS. Picasa? It's what I've been using for importing/organization and if this beats it I'll install it tonight.

So... does this beta already have pixmantec (RawShooter Premium) technology in it? Or is that yet to come? Or ... conspiracy theory here: did adobe really just buy pixmantec to get rid of the competition?

No and despite all the rah rah, I cannot see how a serious company would entertain something on that scale of change in beta - IMO it's just marketing blurb and wishful thinking. There will probably be some stuff under the covers and maybe some additional controls for fill light, vibrance e.t.c. in the future versions.

Not real impressed so far.... Appears pretty dumbed down (can anybody find curves?) and is s..l..o...w.... I have yet to play enough to say anythig about the image rendering.

On Picasa - I never found what people were raving about :-/ Seemed to me like a dinnky little app that is no different from hundreds of others.

well having spent all day figuring out how to work it into my workflow perhaps I can be of some help :)

if you click ctrl-2 (which gets you to the develop tab) you have quite a few options for editing a photo quite extensivly in regards to overall color, saturation, sharpness, hue.. and so on. curves is also there.

I highly doubt that any of that technology has been integrated yet... I'd like to be wrong though!

Yeah, I saw that but it did not seem to let me adjust the curves in the same was as RSP, PS e.t.c. - I will have another look tonight.

I see a number of options on the develop tab and I have to play but I will miss the vibrance slider from RSP :-/ I could also only find a basic noise option rather than the several available in RSP.

One BIG turn off is the lack of speed - I know it's beta code but stuff like that sticks. The other from what I see is this whole database centric view - import photos e.t.c. - I cannot seem to make it import a whole tree structure, it made me point at specific files and if that is where it ends up then that is a lot of work just to get the pics available in the software.

I like the user interface and especially all the most used tools being quickly accessible. I just imported a 99 file directory, processed all of the images for basic corrections and now discover there is no way to export the library enmasse. One photo at a time can be exported, but not the entire library with one command.
Decided to leave some feedback at the Adobe Lightroom website and discovered there is no way to do that either! Jeez, Adobe, get serious!

You have to go to the Macromedia/Adobe Labs discussion forums. The developer group has been fairly active there and seems to listen & respond:

Could have been there all along - instead of getting sued, adobe just bought the 'rights', company and all!
