Planning ahead a bit, is anyone interested in a Hill Country trip to the Lost Maples Park when the leaves are changing? I think it happens late October/early November; there is a WEB-site that tracks the progress and we would have to be flexible and quick. I'll be driving down from Plano.
To those of you in the parts of the world where seasonal changes are routine, let us Texans tell you that it is pretty much the same around here - warm, hot, darned hot, hot, warm, not so warm. Lost Maples is a renegade stand of canyon (bigtooth) maples that offer us some color in the picturesque Texas Hill Country.

I could be up for this. I tried last year though, (fall happened about mid November last year) and Lost Maples was a great drive from Austin. Hill Country scenery was great, not much colour change but an enjoyable drive. Thing was, we got to the park and there was a 1.5 hour wait to get into the park, because it has such a small car park and is about the only place to go in the central Texas area for fall colour.
We probably got there about 1 o'clock on a Sunday - I'd recommend either going during the week if you can, or getting there real early in the morning, when the light will be good and the crowds should be less (unless all the Texan photogs decend on it at once) Car pooling would also be a good idea if you can manage it.
Upshot was, we got to the park, couldn't be bothered waiting to get in and just drove back again... |

During the week is almost required because of the wait and crowds on weekends.
It's almost impossible to take advantage of photo op's with all the people there on weekends.
I'm hoping to get out there this year but it will be a tuesday or wednsday to avoid the masses. |

This is how you can do to see great fall colors in Texas: (Direction from Austin)
Take 183 North.
Then take highway 64 all the way to New Mexico and to Santa Fe. Go north on I-20 to Denver, then go west on I-70 :) or go north to Boulder and to Rocky Mountain National Park.
Forget fall colors in Texas, it's pathetic. Only thing Texas is good for during Fall/Winter is to end up having lots of allergies.
Another drive: go up on I-35 to Kansas in October/November, you'll love the colors. Way better than Texas or Oklahoma.

I wold like ot go but not too sure on my schedule yet.
I would prefer during the week. Last year I got there on a Thursday and only 6 other camp sites were used. Buy Sunday it was full.
Its a nice park, small, but still very nice...
