Here it comes again...that wave. The wave of wanderlust that takes over my mind and occupies my thoughts all the time.

One of these days I will actually give in to the wave, actually take off from this dreaded place and go see the world. The only thing that is stopping me now is money....oh, how I hate money.

Hmmm...anyone know a quick way to get $8,000? ....or a book publishing deal?

Yeah, ain't money awful? If I could publish a book and sell some pics, I could travel, too. Or at least buy more camera gear, then complain lounder about not being able to travel.

Consider yourself lucky if wanderlust only visits you now and again - she lives with me, we're on a first name basis! I totally loath New England...oh, if only I could be on the next plane to, say, Iceland. Go there, I could solve my wanderlust and lack-of-a-girlfriend problems both at once ;-)

Well, you could do what I've always wanted to do. Sell off what you can, take the money and drive till you run out of gas... get a job, save a little up... take off again, rinse, repeat!

Do it while you're young, wanderlust when you're married with a kid is a little more difficult to deal with! Trust me, I know!!!

If you find out, let me know. I'm stagnating and it isn't pretty. A change of scenery would be lovely for a month or so.

I quit my job so I'm halfway there, unfortunately the other half comprises of bills and the need for copious amounts of cash.

I feel your pain.

I only need around 500 euros for a new computer , my disability pension is short , my computer is out and I have to return the laptop a friend has let me.
I can't pay that amount for the moment and this makes me feel sad because everytime I'm more and more limitaded and the net is the only way I have to "go out"...
Well , that's life !

I can totally relate, Caleb. The best way I've found to stem the tide of wanderlust is to try and take smaller trips to local places that you've never been before. Sometimes exploring nearby locations you've never thought of going to before can yield wonderful results. :)

If you're looking for Iceland..go to //www151.pair.com/icephoto/
A friend of mine took all of these and it's a fairly decent photo tour.

Yeah, it's either time or money.
Is there ever enough of both, at the same time?
Or the spouse/girlfriend wants to go to a different location.

Maybe you can travel, take pictures, and even get paid for it.
Search the internet for such golden opportunities, just beware of the cons. Magazine-books-News/Journalism, hired/freelance event photographer-specific sports perhaps.

I see you're from Manhatten. Last May-2005, I traveled to see all of Manhatten. There is *so much* there already. I saw trees growing out of concrete on rooftops. Everywhere else there is less of everything, except natural parks/formations and such.

I friend later told me that some people from there don't even know that other parts of the US exist at long distances away. She said an aquaintence of hers thought Colorado was just a hop (evening-trip) away.

Haha, had to laugh at this. A lot of people from NYC have a strange concept of geography and distance. For instance, I encountered a few who thought that Vermont was in Nebraska, and wanted to know how long it would take me to drive home for a weekend. Go figure...

I'm guessing that the OP is from here:

rather than from here:

Edit to Add: I agree with others that have posted that it doesn't get any better with age, so take advantage of your lack of "roots" and do what you can to take off now!

Well you could try and produce a DVD. If that doesn't work try JayWalk's idea. :P

Indeed...I am from Manhattan, Kansas...not New York.

Eventually I'll find a way to make a little money and get out for awhile...or forever. It's not the time part that I have trouble with...I have all the time I could ever want. I don't have a girlfriend...or school...or anything holding me back from traveling, except for the lack of funds...which I will resolve with time I'm sure.

Porn stardom here I come!

You should go visit Bearmusic. He always has an open invitation and I'm sure you'd learn a tremendous amount about all sorts of things ;)

Edit: and the bus is cheap!

Wanderlust has been my middle name. I do wander locally, and like a gypsy I stumble on some really neat places. It has been with me since I was a baby. Then I wandered on to the back of a snapping turtle and he began walking away with me. A little older, I wandered into a lake and kept on going. My mom had to come and get me as I began to drown, but it didn't stop me from trying to wander again. I've wandered as far as Prince Edwards Island going north and as far as Florida going south, then as far west as Ohio, and now I am looking at the Atlantic and thinking I might wander over that soon. I've wandered along the Appalachian Trail, and nothing ever satisfies me. It is a curse, albeit one full of wonderful experiences and the most interesting folks you could possibly want to meet. Do it, but don't expect to ever be free of the wanderlust. Once it has gripped you, it won't ever let you go. So accomodate it every so often, keep it happy, and maybe it will leave you alone for a few months.
My wanders will be taking me to Newport R.I. in a week, just because I haven't been there for about 20 years. Wonder how it has changed.

This is true. And I have spent my whole life wandering, sometimes as many as 100,000 miles a year on the van. And I decided to settle here. It's very sweet, a nice, self-contained piece of heaven. Come set a bit, Caleb.

Kids, kids kids... some day you will learn that the grass is NOT always greener over the next hill... Well, unless you are from Texas or Oklahoma, then it really is greener and you probably ought to go somewhere else while you can.

;D

I enjoy just wandering around Oregon. I head out for 2 or 3 days, hit all the parks, lakes and sites in one area then pick another area the next time. One of these days I'll run out of places in Oregon to see and will have to branch out to Cali or Washington.

For me it isn't wanderlust, its getting away by myself... and of course getting the shot.

I think I might just sell everything I own and go.
