| Well This was a grat weekend. I bought a canon 350D and a 90-300mm lens but is it not strong enough for me I am going on a safari and need a good lens. I know nothing about lenese. I need a good zoom lens and an ok wide angel lens. Anybody got any recommendations |

I recommend the Sigma 50-500mm. It's big and heavy, but ultra fast and ultra sharp. I took one to Kenya and got some amazing photos with it.

no, it's in another field than the 90-300. The 50-500 covers a huge spectrum and is high quality all the way through the range. It costs about $1200 Australian about $800 USD's. Check this out:

There are 100-300, (though you have close to that), 80-400, 100-400, 50-500, 170-500, 200-500 and last but not least 300-800 (if you have an extra $5500).

| What woudl the difference between Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-200mm and the 90-300mm that I have as the 70-200mm is much bigger then the 90-300mm |

I have that lens. 70-200 is a 2.8 and the 90-300 is 4.5-5.6. It's bigger because it's a faster lens, but it won't reach as far.

Your are most likely looking at a 70-200mm which has a constant f2.8 aperture for the whole range instead of a variable aperture like the 90-300mm. |

the Canon 70-200 comes in a f2.8 (more expensive) and an f4.0 and what that means is that at the widest apertures you'll get a nice soft out of focus background compared to the 90-300 you have, which is really a cheaper lens with cheaper glass. The 70-200 is also a L series which is Canon's finest optics.
The Sigma equivalent 70-200 2.8 will probably cost 50% less but will deliver great results. I have one of these lenses.

I have the Canon 100-400mm L USM IS, and find it great. To add to that, I have the 2X extender. So, with manual focus, I can get an effective 200-800mm lens. I find it really good, and am starting to use it more and more, especially for wildlife and such.
Well worth the price in my opinion.

Sigma 80-400 OS $1000 new (optical stabilization) or
Canon 100-400L IS $1400 Bunch More
Both have similar optics, the canon will focus faster, and they have different zoom designs push pull (canon) vs. twist (sigma).
Other lenses worth checking out if you think 200mm isn't gonna be long enough.
Sigma 100-300 F4 $900, great lens might be perfect for you.
the now out of production Canon 100-300L F5.6 the cheapest i mentioned by a lot.

Can you rent a lens? YOu can rent better than you can afford.
Advice from a friend that as progressed up to all L glass is the Sigma 50-500 is not that great, the tamron 200-500 is better (optically, color, contrast).
I got to try out his 500 F4.5L (nice lens!) and his new 300 f4 IS (another nice lens).
You could get the canon 300 f4L IS for $900 and add a 1.4TC for 420mm reach, you get IS and it's light and with USM focuses fast so you won't miss shots.
For wide...tamron 17-50 2.8 or sigma 18-50 2.8 or if you want really wide canon 10-22 3.5-4.5 or tokina 12-24 f4.

IMO is 300mm isn't long enough, unless you spend 10 grand you're not going to be happy with the lens. A good cheap option may be purchasing extenders for your existing lens and invest in a good heavy duty tripod, and a beanbag.

I have the Tamron 200-500. I really like it but it needs good light to show it's best images. Works great for wildlife in daylight but not as good in low light situations. Costs about $900.
